This review is about Karla S. Mukai, Associate…read more Karla has put herself on the Vancouver Bar Association's lawyer referral list. The problem is, she was too 'busy' to listen or even acknowledge my request through the VBA Lawyer referral program or even conduct the first 30 minute paid interview. I have wasted a half day preparing and waiting for her response. It came in the form of a staffer that made a token call back to me and simply said Karla S. Mukai was 'too busy' and that the type of case I presented (how does she know??) didn't warrant her investment of time. My case is straight forward. It's just procedural paperwork advice, that I wanted to assure was correct. But Karla S. Mukai wouldn't even know that, because she sloughed off the request. The whole experience was an observation of abject unprofessionalism and carelessness. A complete waste of my time. I could only guess she would be completely inept & disinterested had I hired her. Clearly Karla S. Mukai is not accepting new clients and won't even dignify the position with a personal call to acknowledge that fact. Karla S. Mukai should not be on the Lawyer referral list. And frankly, needs some serious coaching on appropriate professionalism.

Thank you to Mr. Roy Ho for all his help throughout my 2.5 years long ICBC case…read more I was referred to Acumen Law Corp. by a friend after my previous lawyer failed providing any actual help but kept charging me 3k per visit in the first 20 months (Total cost was 10k for nothing). After the initial conversation with Mr. Ho, he already told me how much an estimation amount for the case loss and what was the solution. He is very knowledgeable and confident with the case. He even knows each ICBC adjustor's style by all his experience. No matter how did the case end at that moment, I felt so much better and more satisfied than I expected. Unlike the previous lawyer, Mr. Ho keeps all his work transparent. I always received his email updates after he dealt with ICBC. After 6 moths process, my case has been settled with ICBC better than my expectation. Thank you Mr. Ho and his team at Acumen Law Corporation. I would highly recommend this wonderful law firm to anyone who needs legal advice and action for Driving and ICBC related issues.

The website sets out some great stuff, sounds good, sounds like they know what they're talking about, but in the end you'll be disappointed. There is a clerk there and a lawyer that I met but the service is very, very spotty. They are unresponsive. Try sending a note through their website - you won't get a response. That should have told me something, but I submitted twice, and no reply, but I visited them and paid them anyway. ----- It's not June 29, 2012, and I've received an email from Yelp saying the business owner has complained about my review. Looking back on I've raised it from one to two stars because they aren't bottom of the barrel crooks which a one star might suggest. But I will not deal with them in the future, nor will I do business with them. I had in the past and that is the past. I had one conversation with the lawyer there, Don Moir, after that I never had contact with him, it was all through his clerk Stephen Torr. This is the experience that I had and the company doesn't have to like it. They just have to do better.

As a retired lawyer, I respected her advice and her responsiveness. She was also very professional and personable. In addition, her fees were extremely reasonable. I hired Mary on two occasions. Firstly on behalf of my aged parents to prepare a codicil to a Will as well as Powers of Attorney. Secondly to prepare an Alter-Ego Trust (aka living trust) for my father. Based upon my personal experiences, I would have no hesitation to recommend Mary's services for Wills and Estates matters.

I am not at all pleased with services of lawyer Mary Richter (see website http://richter-law.ca),…read morewho was recommended by a banker then managing the wealth of aged parents following the sale of their Kitsilano home. He was recently downsized/retired rather sooner than he would have liked - probably for the best, in my view. Thanks for nothing. Ms. Richter was retained to update the wills - a fairly simple job as parents had no stock portfolios or other complicated holdings or second families to worry about - yet somehow an error was made identifying one beneficiary. Sloppy drafting - not that big a deal, right? However, rather than visit their care facility to own and correct her error, Ms. Richter summoned at her pleasure fragile, aged ps to her office, a huge, unnecessary inconvenience especially in view of Cadillac pricing of many hundred dollars an hour. Quaere whether parents may even have been billed for the time taken to correct the error. That was bad enough. More recently, ancient forebears asked Ms. Richter to inquire into the possibility of burial plots deceased father-in-law may have purchased for his wife and daughter at a local cemetery. A fairly simple matter, one would have thought, but Ms. Richter was disinclined to stir her lazy stumps. She didn't want the work even after ancients expressed willingness to pay to end the nagging uncertainty. Because burial plots today represent considerable real estate assets, we found this a most irksome, unsatisfactory response. Frankly, it cast doubt on Ms. Richter's efforts such that I have now suggested the file be referred to a competitor, someone who proofreads his work and considers the wishes and frailties of his clients, someone with a more enlightened approach and commitment to service. i wish parents could have paid an earnest law student instead to do the work at a fraction of the cost and inconvenience, but the Law Society of British Columbia won't allow even graduates to charge for services until they have: 1) articled a year with one of the only about three firms big enough to offer such positions, 2) re-completed law school from a six-week refresher make-work course and 3) passed a bar exam re-examining the already examined materials studied over three years at law school. Maverick young Ontario lawyers recently made a pitch to end such medieval nonsense as have some of their counterparts in the U.S. but lawyers so far maintain a tenacious grip on who can charge for services. The monopoly lawyers impose on us is nothing more than a determined effort to restrict trade in order to protect outrageous, utterly undeserved fees, which have in turn created an access to justice crisis just about everywhere. Nor does the lawyers' regulating body in ANY jurisdiction do much, if anything, to protect the public contrary to their lofty promises. Happily, the second machine age now very much upon us will soon replace these ancient, rusted has-beens with software that will do the work faster, better and cheaper. I also understand that one may contract for the drafting and litigation of a will with a freelancer at Elance, a virtual law office of some renown where clients are not expected to subsidize a high-end downtown or, in Ms. Richter's case, Kerrisdale rent.
