On such nice days, I can also recommend walking into town to grab a beer, unless of course you need to drive ;-) The Parking is right under the market, when you drive into Enschede from the east on the Gronausestraat (as many, many Germans do every weekend) you just stay on that road and it basically ends at the entrance to the parking structure. You get up the stairs/elevator, and you're in the middle of the market place. It's perfect! Coming from the west, it's not quite as simple, but still not that hard either. If you don't speak dutch, don't worry. The sellers all speak German because they're their best customers, and most people speak english as well. On a sunny saturday, good place to go!

For one thing, it is absolutely enormous…read more There must have been at least 50 vendors present selling everything from breads, cheese, vegetables, etc. to fresh flowers, plants, belts, and cooked foods. They are open year round on Wednesdays and Saturdays 7am to 2:30pm. Two striking things: one is local shoppers' willingness to pay a premium for premium quality. The fruits and vegetables are clearly local and likely organic. For example, the strawberries are really small compared to what we can get in the US. People come out to support their farmers' markets regularly, making these markets viable and sustainable. The other thing is just how customized these trucks are. They are not the normal boxes you see in street fairs like San Gennaro's in Manhattan's Little Italy. Vendors have invested significantly to contribute to the farmers market experience. Finally, I can't say enough about the space that makes this possible. The entire market is within the cobblestone courtyard around St. Paulus Dom which is enormous. Like Heilig Kreuz, St. Paulus Dom is ringed by a road, which permits parking for cars and bicycles on both sides. In other words, there is no enormous asphalt carpark creating a heat sink. Instead, the courtyard is planted with trees. Even then, most of the patrons must have walked or bicycled, because there were available parking spaces for cars on the street level! Granted, there is an underground carpark located not too far away, but still a decent distance by foot. The only people we saw entering vehicles located in the above-ground parking area were people with mobility challenges. Younger children were in strollers that double as carriers attached to bicycles. Older children came with their parents powering their own bicycles.

When the Carlstadt district was laid out in the second half of the 18th century, this square was part of the plan. It was originally a parade ground for the French garrison during the French occupation of Düsseldorf in 1797. The Prussians also used Carlsplatz around the middle of the 19th century to exercise for their soldiers who were stationed in the barracks on Kasernenstrasse. In 1997, a group of traders was formed and they lease the square from the city and run the market themselves. The glass roof was added in 1998 and the glass pavilions in 2002. The market is held here six days a week and consists of some 60 traders with food, produce, meat, fish, bakery goods, fresh flowers and other trade goods. I also liked that so many of the stores also had lots of free samples that let you try and taste before buying. So this is not just a produce market, there are also a variety of food stalls - from Germany bratwurst to Italian and Indian - something for everyone! Would suggest shopping around tho' as prices vary tons. BTW, I visited on a Saturday and then came back again on Sunday, but it was closed, so be aware of that.
