I can't even begin to explain the awesomeness that was Comic Con. In other words (to quote Molly), it was amazeballs!! It was my first and I actually went by myself. I had a blast and I think part of that was because I didn't go in expecting anything and I didn't take it all too seriously (cough, like some of the other reviews here, cough cough). Thanks to the Yelp deal not only did I get a discount on my 3 day pass but I got my own line to check in and a goodie bag. I'll admit I was a bit nervous thinking about what I was walking into but as soon as I entered the massive room filled with comics and so on, I light up like I was 9 again waiting to go to the comic shop with my dad on a Saturday morning. A room filled with actors, artists, toys, comics, film, people dressed up, and so on. How can you bitch and moan with all of this around you?!? What really made the event for me was how nice the artists and actors were. Like unbelievably nice!! I had great conversations left and right. Let's just say that you could have walked the place in two hours I spent four and a half there. I met local artists, the Suicide Girls (see photo), Chicago Steam Punk peeps, Chicago Roller Girls, and just about everyone. As for the super nice actors (ok, I wasn't expect this at all), you could walk right up and talk to most of them. I met and talked to Lou Ferrigno, Mimi Rodgers, Louis Gossett Jr (I'm a major fan now), Torchwood guys Kai Owen (Rhys) & Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto), a few Walking Dead cast, and actually had a great conversation with Sean Patrick Flanery (Boondock Saints). Not to mention chatting with a few of the costume people around. Kind was flying high after all of that! Though I really just wanted to meet Julie Benz (hottie). Yes, price were high on a few things but I think there was a lot of deals around. Yes, there were traffic jams but have some patience there is a lot of people there. And yes, the food was all kinds of disgusting, fatty, heart stopping, and expensive... so don't eat it. Oh and parking was a bit of a pain but it all worked out. Thanks Yelp for letting me get my nerd on. I'll be back next year.

If…read moreyou're not familiar with Edison Park, it's a neighborhood of Chicago north of Harlem Ave, on Northwest Highway, just south of Park Ridge. Edison Park fest spans several blocks and runs parallel to the Union Pacific Northwest Metra line. The festival totes two music stages, plenty of port o potties, several good vendors, a kids section, traveling carnival games, and several business vendor tents. There's pretty much something for everybody. Edison Park fest was well organized and spaced-out. I really had a good time walking around, sipping a beer, and perusing the many business tents. Metal barricades stops any temptation to trample on any residential front lawns running along this neighborhood festival, so make sure you get in on either Oliphant Ave or Ozark Ave. I had a really good time. So if you are in the north side and looking for a street festival without the crazy amount of crowds, definitely check out Edison Park fest.

Edison Park is home to many police / first responders so you know it is going to be safe here. The crowd from here can get a little sketchy, but it is always a good time. The fest is between the Metra stop and Moretti's and spans a few city blocks. The food here is standard carnival fare. Nothing too great that I saw, but I enjoyed the fresh squeezed lemonade. They have vendors that serve up everything - most unhealthy, but delicious. Prices aren't too bad and the lines were pretty short when I went on a Saturday. There is a giant area of kids bouncy castles. These are pay as you go and is managed by an outside company. Some rides are good and take a few minutes, others are over in 30 seconds. They all cost $2-$3 each, so choose wisely if you don't splurge on the $30 day pass. There are several live music acts performing all weekend. It isn't my cup of tea, but people seem to like the 80s/90s rock cover bands. Rock on!

Food was great! However, if you come Saturday night- forget about eating- The lines are long. ( that's because the food is on amazing). My suggestion is to come mid afternoon 3-5pm either Saturday or Sunday and your wait won't be long- heck, there might not be a line at all. Roasted lamb and pig were AMAZING. Fresh and right off the spit. That was my meal on Saturday afternoon. Their sausages, chevaps, are also great. The Serbian hamburger is OUT OF THIS WORLD AND AMAZING. This was my Sunday lunch and dinner. Saturday night has an assortment of music genres folk music, rock music, they had a string/banjo band and I saw a number of kids listening to a young dj outside on my way out. Every music group had their own room. They also have folk dancers that were great! The costumes were beautiful. This is truly a family festival. They also had a small children's section. They should consider expanding that. Prices were similar to other festival prices. They asked for a donation of $5 when we walked into the festival. Overall a 5 star rating They still need to implement a better system for the LONG food lines during prime time. My family and I will be there next year!

We arrived around 7:30pm and got our tickets and stood in line. 8pm. 8:30pm. Around 9pm we make it to the front of the line and it stops completely. They announce that they may be able to give everyone currently in line 1 portion of Lamb or Pig, but it's going to take another 30 minutes or so to cook. People are getting drunk and impatient and it's becoming unpleasant. At 9:05pm we give up, take our tickets, and buy $20 worth of $5 Lav beers that don't even fill the plastic cups. I'm not sure what happened and how they ran out of one of the main attractions of the festival with 3 more hours to go. It was disappointing and, in my opinion, a waste of our time. Someone toward the entrance was discussing this situation with another man and it sounded like there was an ordering error that hadn't been fixed in time. I dunno. Your best bet might be to come during the day, closer to 2-4pm or so, before it gets crowded and well before they might be running out of roasted goodness.

It sneaked up…read moreon the events calendar unexpectedly, but we found time to attend it, since it's so close to home. The fest took place in pretty much the same space as Taste of Park Ridge, closing off Summit Ave. between Touhy and Prospect, between the library and Metra station. As a festival, it didn't really have a huge setup and not much in terms of variety. All the food vendors, except for a carnival food stand, were pizza places from the area. Caponie's, Carmine's, and Georgio's Chicago Pizzeria were a few of the vendors participating. There was a concert stage setup on the street and for a small festival they did pretty good at lining up shows: Foghat (big-time 70s band) on Friday and Daryl Stuermer (Genesis & Phil Collins guitarist) as the headliner for Saturday night. Weather did not cooperate Friday night, as a cold wind blew through at peak dinner time and dropped the temps about 15 degrees, blowing away paper plates, napkins and a light drizzle followed. Still, it did not deter us from trying pizzas, sheltered by the walls of the Metra station to shield us from the wind. Weather notwithstanding, I was disappointed with the fest. For an event focused completely on a food, pizza in this case, I really expected a more adventurous menu from each of the participants. But instead it was the same thing pretty much across the board: cheese, sausage, or pepperoni, thin crust or deep dish. Why bother doing a fest dedicated to pizza if you don't have something more exotic to offer as a topping: BBQ chicken, pineapple, shrimp, goat cheese, heck, even mushrooms! But it gave me a level playing field to try. I had a Caponies brick oven sausage pizza, which was very good. One of my kids had Carmine's cheese pizza, which had an odd-tasting sauce and the layer cheese peeled off the top in one bite. Pizza fail! Carmine's probably had the worst. My other son and my wife both got Giorgio's of South Barrington's deep dish personal-sized cheese pizzas and those by far stood out as the best pizza at the fest. For a kid who never tried deep dish before, my son was very impressed with it and ate the whole thing. Cost-wise, the pizza prices were reasonable. There was a $5 admission fee to the fest, just to get in the gate, but if you are going to see a show, it's a good deal. I saw the Daryl Stuermer concert and he put on almost 2 hours of Genesis material and a few of his own instrumental works mixed in. Daryl's band sounds really good and he did a very authentic job covering Genesis, even some of it dating back to the 70s. And there was even a contingent of diehard Genesis fans, the ones who wear the Foxtrot album cover T-shirts, in attendance. If Pizza Fest II happens next year, I hope the participating vendors open up their cookbooks and bring out more pizza variety, putting forth some adventurous pizzas rather than just playing it safe with essentially the same selection at every booth.
