I had been searching with DNA matches to cousins on various ancestry sites and not getting any answers when I finally contacted Debra. It was time to know for sure. I was also under the false impression that my mother was no longer living so when Debra saw my file, found a name and told me she was she alive, I sort of panicked. I hadn't expected to be reaching out to a live person! What if she didn't want to connect, how would I handle that? I decided either way, I wanted to know. Debra coached me through what to do but left the final decisions up to me. I wrote a letter of introduction for myself, knowing that may be as close as I ever get. Debra kept me informed of all the steps as we took them because I've never done anything like this before. Debra reached out and I heard back immediately and then met my mom within days of that contact. It's been such a wonderful feeling to know I look like someone, something an adoptee fully understands. I now have a connection to history. I have known ancestry. It's odd to say but knowing about them has made such a difference in knowing about me. My father's identity is still a mystery but that's okay at this time. I have a mother who wants a relationship with me and we share so much in common it's like finding a new best friend.
