We always had prompt professional service with our taxes. Mowery & Schoenfeld purchased Hochfelder & Weber and we had them do our taxes. Our taxes are relatively straight forward: We own a rental property that we live in, husband self-employed, I was a straight W-2 until I retired. We got all our paperwork into them for 2023 taxes in in early March, we needed a tax figure for a real estate tax issue by April 5 and they couldn't provide it. The firm went waaaay past the 4/15 deadline for filing even after multiple emails and phone calls to the accountant. We didn't know if we owed, were due a refund, if they filed an extension...zero communication. We finally heard from the accountant in May and found that we were due a refund. Still no tax return sent to us. after multiple calls we finally received our return on May 29 with the refund amount which had not been communicted to us earlier. On July 8, 2024 we received notice from the IRS that our tax return had been miscalculated and our refund was being reduced. We sent this information to the accountant (who I'm not naming here - just her firm) to ask what the discrepancy was. We have sent numerous emails and phone calls since and have had no return emails or calls. We have not received a bill for their services....at this point they owe us money for the hoops we've had to jump through. It is July 15 and still no return call or email. Absolutely unprofessional.

When I raised the issue, Danny Roseth responded with a long justification about how busy he is -- including being "up since 5 in the morning," having "80 emails" he "hasn't had a second to look at," and that his normal response time is "2-3 days." I'm sure he's busy, but if that's the standard expectation for responsiveness before you even become a client, it's an easy pass for me. I was looking for a tax advisor who has the capacity to take on new clients and communicate in a timely, consistent way -- without needing to justify delays as an unavoidable "feature" of the business that clients should simply accept. I don't. update If you look at Danny's comments, what's missing? Accountability. Not we could have done better. Not an awareness that communication takes two parties. Instead, calling me an internet troll. Making me the problem. In 35 years, every client was happy? What company has a perfect record? Perfection is a goal. Not reality.
