One of the workers in the gift shop gave us an intro when we bought our tickets. You should definitely start across the street at the hotel/museum. That hotel/house has history all its own aside from the lighthouse. The family that lived there and ran it. I loved the house and it seems to have stayed in great condition after hundreds of years. In the hotel/house, you start with a short movie in the side room and then you can tour the house at your leisure. The house has multiple items displayed from over the years. There are also boards with a bit of history as you make your way through. Outside of the hotel/house is a relaxing area by the water. You could relax there or it'd be a perfect place for a wedding or special occasion. Once finished there, you can make your way back across the street to the lighthouse. On the lighthouse side, there are other buildings where people that took care of the place stayed. There's also a small storybook trail. It's not long at all but it has these storyboards around it talking about this cat named Nelly. That's all fun and stuff... but at the end of the trail, you see a little cat graveyard with cats that have been on the property over the years. When we walked up and I noticed Nelly was already buried! THE HORRRRRRRRRRORRRRRRR! On to the lighthouse; You can climb up to the top of the lighthouse. I think there is a sign that mentions 222 steps or something. It gets very steep near the top. Great exercise and it made me forget all about the cat graveyard. It's a cool place. I was intrigued by the Cincinnati Reds connection too. Other notables: Across the street is a restaurant and ice cream place. I don't think those two spots are related to the lighthouse itself but it's nice that they're there. We tried out both and they weren't bad at all. We didn't venture further down the road but we were told more restaurants/locations are further down. If you like history or inlets or just lighthouses, check out this place if you're in the area.

The beach itself was pretty small, and it was crowded. The water wasn't too rough. There were a lot of kids and families, so clearly a good place for the kids to swim. My favorite part were all of the dogs. There were so many puppers on the beach! Overall, I'll give it a 3. It was fine, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go here for a beach day.

There is a Sugar Mill Ruins located here as well as some gorgeous flowers to fully enjoy! Unbelievably, it's FREE to enjoy and accepts Donations! Be sure to check the mailbox at the entrance area for a map of the grounds! The kids enjoyed walking around and seeing the historic ruins of the Sugar Mill. It was very relaxing and shaded! I'm totally into the flowers because it reminds me so much of my daddy! Ponce Preserve is a hidden gem located along the Port Orange intercostal. Some friends and I wanted…read moreto explore some local parks and hiking trails to enjoy what Florida has to offer, and we stumbled along this preserve. There's ample parking areas within its gates. There's even a bathroom that has toilets that flush which can be hard to find at some community parks. There was a playground, picnics tables, beautiful oak trees and probably a mile or so worth of trails. You have two options when you begin your exploration-you can go to the river or close to the beach. The trail to the intercostal was my personal favorite, walking along the beautiful dock made me feel like we striding through the Mangroves. There was also a great lookout at the end. If you choose to head toward the beach, there's several trails that loop together and you can even walk over to the beach too!

If you have children, there is a great splash park on the property and you can also rent Kayaks to go into the Halifax River. It also has a pretty good view of the Halifax. The property is spaced nicely and it is an attractive and peaceful place they come and spend some time. There is plenty of parking and the property is well-maintained. I would definitely recommend a visit here. I also have to give it five stars (). If you find yourself in Port Orange, come by and check it out.

Reed Canal Park is a nice addition to the community around it. It is not a huge park by any means,…read morehowever it is a pleasant enough place and it is kind of cool to watch the kids feeding the turtles. Apparently, feeding the turtles is a pretty commonplace things here, because the turtles knew the minute they seen human beings to swim towards the bridge and wait for the inevitable downpour of food offerings. There are two entrances to the park. One has swings and all that and the other one really just focuses on the little water there. I would definitely recommend that if you were in the area to stop by. Make sure you bring some kind of food offering for the turtles. There are also plenty of ducks and other birds around and while there are signs asking you not to feed the birds bread, they do say that they like rice and other things.

Volusia County provided the land and paid most of the $850,000 in expansion project costs. The project was funded in part with grants from the Volusia ECHO program and the Daytona Beach Racing and Recreational Facilities District. The park and beach area are ADA accessible. There are sheltered picnic areas, grills, children's playground with padded ground, disability-accessible restrooms, water fountain, outdoor showers, 134 off-beach parking spaces, handicapped parking and a wooden observation deck. The Shores Hotel and the covered walkway across Atlantic Avenue is just north of the park and a nice place for food and drinks as well.
