This is a bit of a strange one, as though I have visited this place at least twice and spent quite a bit of time talking to the sales and mechanical staff, they've yet to receive any of my cash - sorry, guys!
But that should not reflect badly on Winstanleys, as this is more down to my having other competent and more local bike shops for when I need to cycle (or wheel!) my bike in for repair, and also that I decided to stick with my existing bikes rather than take the plunge and buy new.
The set-up here is unique. I would say they inhabited a middle ground between your high street bike shop and an online-only place such as Wiggle. I'm not an expert, but their website lists a lot of their stock as discounted by 30%. Barring a few exceptions, when I compare prices with Evans Cycles, Winstanleys discounts look to be genuine bargains. However, fit and feel being critical with bikes, Winstanleys win out over a 100% online operation in that they have an astronomical amount of bikes in stock which they are willing to unbox and set up for you to ride. Obviously, this is going to attract some time-wasters (such as myself!) and you really need to narrow down your parameters to three or four bikes otherwise you might get a bit of a cold shoulder - fair enough, really!
The location is an industrial estate reached by turning off the main road between Pemberton and Wigan at the big Asda, but I'll leave the rest of the directions to the Yelp map! The beauty of being located on a very quiet industrial estate is that you have some fantastic stretches of clear tarmac outside to belt up and down on test rides. Premises are a warehouse unit, small reception downstairs and bike showroom upstairs. Staff are relaxed and helpful, and not my field but there is at least one BMX specialist and indeed a whole separate Winstanleys BMX website.
The first time I was here shopping for a flat bar road bike, with informed discussion with the salesperson Andrew, including the down-to-earth suggestion of keeping the budget to £500 for a hybrid bike. (You could go a lot higher for road or mountain bikes, but that is a sensible limit for a hybrid, apparently.) I had test rides on a couple of bikes - no high pressure sales, just being there to answer my questions and help me make up my mind.
The other time, I was in the area with a mechanical problem after an upgrade by another bike shop. Again, Andrew was great, gave my bike an extensive test ride before pinpointing the smallest cog on my cassette as the sole source of the problem.
The downside here is that if you are the sort of person who needs to look at a lot of bikes, and especially if you need to look at cycling components and accessories then this may not be the place for you. Again, if you get a bit claustrophobic, then Saturday afternoon in the run up to Christmas is not the time to be standing around the modestly-sized reception area!
For me, although I have yet to fully test their customer services, this would be my first port of call if I wanted to splash a lot of cash on a steel touring bike or similar - they seem like good guys, they are not too far from me and the price is definitely right! read more
