A lot of little girl's dream of being dancer's at one time or another ;) When I was young my Mom bought us yearly season tickets and it benefitted me in so many ways! Choreographer Mark Godden and Conductor Bramwell Tovey came to be highly regarded Canadian artists and it was a pleasure to see their career's progress. This is a great avenue for parent's to expose children to wonderful costume's, music, stories and artists.

It opened in 1987 when volunteers renovated the building to make a community arts facility. The first concert - Spirit of the West - was a total success and since then the calendar has been full with dance performances, concerts and literary readings. Nothing can equal the intimacy of the WECC or the diverse performers that come to grace it's stage. I was there when the Skydigger's played and the joint rocked so hard that the floor collapsed and the show was discontinued. I was also there on a quiet, rainy night -the first time I was brave enough to go to a concert alone - when Bob Snider sang and joked with us. The room was only 1/2 full, and it felt like we were all old friends laughing and having a conversation around his guitar. I also loved seeing local bands like Transistor Sound & Lighting Co. and Weakerthans play when they were starting out. Tickets are so reasonable too! This place is a gift to the city...

In a nutshell, up-and-coming musicians as…read morewell as seasoned veterans perform gigs across Canada in small, intimate gatherings at people's homes. Very community oriented. Very intimate. Artists deliver the same show in a living room that they would present at a folk festival or a concert hall. The difference is that you're in a crowd of 20 - 40 versus hundreds or thousands. It's very easy to chat with the performers during the show and it's exciting to see everything close up, like the subtle signals musicians send each other when they're performing in an ensemble or when they do something that wasn't planned. Home Routes strives to bring music to rural communities. Artists are booked to perform 12 performances in one of eight circuits that include BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and the Yukon. I lucked out this evening. A friend of a friend had an extra ticket to tonight's performance in Calgary featuring Grant Simpson, a stride pianist/singer/songwriter and Kate Weekes, a guitarist/mandolinist/singer/songwriter. Attendees pitched in by bringing appetizers to share and their own drinks. Some brought chairs. After mingling for 45 minutes or so, we all headed downstairs around 7:30 to the hosts' music room for the performance. What's neat about Home Routes is that 85% of your ticket price goes to the artist. The series runs mostly on the generosity of volunteer hosts and the community pitching in when they attend. The remaining 15% goes towards administrative costs, such as maintaining the website and booking-related costs. It was too bad the piano was badly out of tune. It was one of those small console uprights that was against the wall. That's fine for practicing and impromptu performances but it should have been tuned for this performance. Grant's strength lies in his storytelling and his lyrics. "Stalin's Tango" was a witty way to present Stalin's betrayal by Hitler and his ensuing revenge. "Watch Sylvia Ride" was an inspiring song about a spunky, petite cowgirl who trekked up north with her kids, picked up some homeless kids along the way and ran a ranch. The duets with Kate showed off their chemistry well. Grant isn't so strong in his technical and musicianship skills. His music lacked rhythmic, harmonic, dynamic and tonal variation. Perhaps it was his set selection for the evening. Either way, Maestro would have left the room had he attended. Kate was the star of the show. She recently returned from a string of gigs in Japan. Her songs have beautiful lyrics, melodic lines, while her chords and harmonic rhythms were more varied. She has a very sweet and down to earth singing voice. I enjoyed all her songs enough to race up the stairs to plunk down my $20 for her debut CD. "Land Shaping the People" is her song inspired by paddling 740+ km in the Yukon. It was very easy to envision the river and the trees peppering the landscape for as far as the eye could see. Another favourite was "Red Lantern" which is about leaving a light on for the last dog musher in a race. The hosts' home was lovely. They've done a good job decorating. It was an treat to just be there. The food was good but then, home-made appetizers usually are. I give 5 stars for the concept and set-up of the program but 3.5 stars for tonight's performance, which would give it an overall rating of 4 stars. Tickets are $15/concert, which is extremely reasonable. They also do season subscriptions. Since this is community-based, they don't really advertise. Word of mouth is their strongest asset. However, I'm sure if you call or email the Home Routes team, you can arrange to attend an upcoming performance.

They add some sunshine for the cold & dark Winnipeg fall-spring season. The Mtc is very decent size theater which is located downtown. One issue is parking which can be quite costly. I joined the annual subscriber program with a friend about 5 years ago. During the last two years another friend of mine has also joined in with us. I have the cheapest seats in the subscriber program. It is affordable & even though it is the cheapest seats you can comfortably and perfectly view the preformance. The subscriber program is a great way to see all preformances at a bit of a cheaper cost; instead of buying indivdual tickets. The subscriber program allows you to change dates if you are unable to attend without a fee. Also you get a discount on purchasing extra tickets if you want to bring a friend/family member. I find I use this option alot. I like to buy tickets as birthday or christmas gifts for friends or family. It makes for a great night out! The season runs from Oct to May with about 6 preformances. The preformances vary each season. The themes for preformances also vary from serious, classic, fantasy, new formed plays, musicals, holiday themed, dramas & comedies. The sets, costumes and visual effects during the preformances are always exceptional. You can truly see the effort, detail, passion & dedication. The actors and actresses are very talented and bring each preformance to light. The ushers and staff at MTC are always friendly and helpful. There is a small canteen to purchase alcohol and some snacks. MTC awakened my soul & brought love for live theater. It has brought many memories with my family and friends. I recommend to check out the shows online and head out to see one!

The six plays throughout the year are often varied and wonderfully done. For us there is about one play a year that is difficult to stay for the second act; however the other five more than make up for it. Each year there is at least one play that goes on our all-time favourite list and you can see the staff work hard on variety and quality. The sets are wonderfully done and the behind the scenes tour is outstanding. A true gem in our city!

There is a room downstairs for $75 and the theater for $400 and you need an union member if you want to use the stage the stage. These were also the prices in 2008. We got to use the dressing rooms, they set up all the chairs for us, and they let us have the run of the place for pictures (accept the stage). We had an issue with our party venue and almost couldn't get into it because the weekend manager died and the Pantages staff was ready to rally together and throw us a reception. They were so wonderful I can't even begin to touch on it. If you are looking for a fantastic alternative venue for any sort of event I recommend this place!! They also have plays and concerts and stuff like that

Geez. What a special experience. I just got back from my first Winnipeg Folk Festival and I guess…read moreI'll be a lifer from from now on, if I'm lucky. It's hard to describe and it is a bit like being absorbed into a secret cult, except it's only secret because it's in the woods in Manitoba, and it's not a cult it's just a magic weekend at a campground full of friendly, diverse families loving music. There are no corporate sponsors or brands, all the food is local, and all the presenters and organizers seem wildly earnest. There are workshops all day where the musicians in the fest are brought together to jam and tell stories around different themes (my favourite.) And then big shows at the main stage each night with thousands of people sitting and listening carefully, and thousands more dancing politely on the side to not block the view. The other thing you should know is that there is the festival proper, which consists of a main stage and about 6 other smaller stages set throughout the woods around the Birds Hill Provincial park, easy walking distances between them, to which you can purchase a day or full weekend pass and see everyone from Feist and the Shins to Bruce Cockburn and Daniel Lanois (and that was all just this past weekend, plus hundreds more.) There are taverns with local beer on tap and all kinds of food vendors from local Winnipeg restaurants. And then outside of the festival grounds there are the festival camping grounds, and this is almost like another festival entirely. Tent cities tucked between trees and stretching across fields, every imaginable kind of hippy van and RV, homemade teepees and Buckminster Fuller geodesic domes and yurts, a whole popup music venue and bar in a tent slinging whiskey and the tent walls shaking till the early morning hours with insane bands and crowds pushed up against them signing along. There is an endless mushroom-fueled drum circle on Pope's Hill watching for Aurora Borealis, and every fifteen steps there is another campfire, with a group of new friends of all ages, curled around a couple guitars, ukes, banjos, mandos, a standup bass, even a full drum kit at one campsite, drawing you in to singalong as you pass by. There is a dress up tent, and a trading post, and the most delicious pizza oven on wheels... and so much more. I'm super thankful to have been indoctrinated into this weird special extended loving love-in. Much love and gratitude to the organizers and the endless streams of smiling volunteers. Can't wait to go back.

I work at The Forks, so I get plenty of questions from tourists about what there is to see in the…read morecity and The Winnipeg Railway Museum is a place that I always recommend. I visited in the middle of winter last year and it was fantastic. They've turned the old docking shelter for trains next to the station right into a rich tapestry of Winnipeg's past as a central shipping hub for North America. Rates are low--especially for students--and the sheer volume of detailed displays, preserved vehicles and train equipment, and interesting information is well worth the price of admission. There are multiple preserved trains cabs that you can explore inside of, my experience inside them brought me back to being a kid in the Children's Museum back before it was renovated. If you go in the winter, bring a coat! The interior is far too large and too old of a building to keep it heated, so it gets chilly!
