Is in honor of Joshua Levine who lost his life after being struck by a car and his dog Ozzi never left his side. Overall I stopped going to this dog park: People drop their dogs off and leave a lot. Like daily. Others have said the same thing. I don't care if they are skating, they are just plain gone. They don't know if their dog went to the bathroom and needs to be cleaned up, they are not around but all interior gates are open so I can't go in without possibly letting their dog out. One dog was snarling at me though the gate. People with no dogs sit on the bench in the big dog section and drink alcohol. The stupid irresponsible "pools" (sorry I just have to say this) never get dumped and so tadpoles literally grow in them. If you want a baby in a diaper playing in the "pool" (actually a big sandbox) with your dog have at it, but tainted water should never be an option at dog park. Dogs get sick on that garbage. I have let the "powers that be" know my thoughts (they asked, I told them). Has a big dog side and a small dog side. Has water, bags provided, trash cans, portopotties, paved parking right by the dog park, plenty of shade in the big dog side. The ground now has wood chips. One bench in big dog side. More trash cans to come as they raise money. $9000 is all that they had to spend and I think they did an outstanding job with only that much. Still more work to be done. My choice of stars is NOT necessarily where my head is at, I just want to write a review. Because the City is being so responsive and accommodating I don't want to give them less than they deserve, but the people make a Park and these people check out daily. This is a quick review so pardon the jumping around. I'm rather over this experience. When kids purposely skate in parking lot specifically to make it hard for dog park patrons to park? Something is very wrong. Honestly? It's a lost cause at this point.

Plenty of room, good parking, bags and trash provided. No water fountain so bring your own water. Hours are sunup to sundown. Some chairs provided no doubt by patrons, a picnic table, has wood chips as ground covering. Very close to town. DeLaveaga Park is right next door, but they are separate parks. There are some tunnels for the dogs but I find they just attract those who want to mark their territory. It's a good stretch your legs place and then easy to leave since the dog is done since few other dogs come to play here. Another park close by that is also run by Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation is Pacheco Dog Park which is similar but more dogs go there and it has water. We have been here maybe 10 times in a couple years. We have been to 73 dog parks in 6 years. I like it here for what I'm after on that side of town.

It is not really a public park in…read moreterms of there aren't a whole lot of public benches, picnic tables, garbage receptacles, playgrounds etc... What it does have are numerous trails, most if not all are unpaved that weave into this raw open space. Some parts of the hills are open grass lands thus no shade. Some trails go into a forested area where lots of trees are some being smaller redwoods, thus lots of shade there. I picked a route/loop that was about 4 miles that had a little incline and mostly through the forested area. It was mostly on the Spring Trail. There's an old Limestone Kiln on this trail that used to extract limestone from rocks, which was then used for mortar and plaster to help build California in the 1900s. So a little piece of history here. Not crowded at all (which I love) during a Monday afternoon. More joggers than hikers for some reason, no bikers that I saw and lots of leashed dogs strolling with their owners. Santa Cruz is a very dog friendly town. I'm assuming most if not all users here are from the surrounding neighborhoods/university. I ran into lots of colorful plant life along with the birds those tow, small lizards basking in the sun and even a 3 foot snake right on the trail. Startled me at first as it is well camouflaged on the dirt and shade from the trees. I could tell by the shape of the head that it wasn't a rattle snake, so I just carefully stepped around it as not startle it. Unlike many people I don't freak out on these occurrences, so this was more exciting to me than worrisome. But glad I found this open space as I often like to exercise/hike while I'm visiting an area and now I can pair this with some beach relaxation afterwards. Santa Cruz score!
