Unfortunately, the quality and culture of the studio have declined significantly since Mr. Kim assumed responsibility from his father. Mr. Kim lacks experience in managing a studio and consistently demonstrates a transactional, money driven approach. His communication with customers is unprofessional. My son is a second degree black belt and was working toward his third degree black belt, a two year commitment. At 18 months into the program, he suffered a broken toe during routine sparring in class. When I called the studio to inform them of the injury and our need to discontinue training, I expected empathy or at least acknowledgment of the situation. Instead, Mr. Kim's immediate response was that we would still be charged for the upcoming month. There was no concern for my son's injury, no expression of support, and not even a suggestion that he return once healed, despite he had only six months left to complete his third degree. After a decade of loyalty and commitment to the studio, it was deeply disappointing to encounter such an insensitive and dismissive response. It became unmistakably clear that the priority was not the student's long term dedication or progress, but simply securing the next month's payment. We never imagined our relationship with the studio would end this way after ten years of trust, consistency, and support only to find ourselves arguing over a single month's charge. Yet Mr. Kim left us no choice. His rigid, money first approach made it painfully evident that the relationship meant far less to him than it ever did to us.

It quickly became evident that the owners and instructors prioritize profit over the well-being and development of the kids. The Asian manager at the time, knowing that I will not continue with class refuse to give my son a little sticker at the end of his trial test, saying that he did not qualified, when all 10 other kids got a stick for their belt. It was clear that the instructors were more concerned about filling their classes and collecting fees than actually teaching the kids valuable skills or fostering a love for martial arts. He was cold blooded and didn't give in after my wife complained about it, people like that should NOT be around kids! It felt less like a nurturing environment for kids and more like a money-making machine. I expected a supportive community where children could learn and grow, but instead, I found an atmosphere driven by profits. If you care about your child's development and well-being, I would recommend looking elsewhere for a martial arts studio.

I was worried we wouldn't be able to find a place where my kid would be able to thrive since she really struggles with following and processing verbal instructions, and I can't brag about the staff here enough! The coaches are incredibly patient and intentional. They take the time to break things down step by step, demonstrate each move, and give my child the opportunity to learn through repetition and practice in a way that really works for her. What has been most meaningful is seeing my child's confidence grow because she is improving in not only technical skills, but also in how to carry herself in just daily everyday life. I see my child now more willing to try, to keep going even when something feels hard, and really feel pride. Her peers are kind, encouraging, and inclusive. I have seen other kids step in to help her when she is struggling with a move, which says so much about the culture the dojo creates! We are so grateful to have found a place where she feels supported, understood, and motivated to keep growing. I highly recommend for anyone researching a dojo for their child to start!

My kids started their…read morelessons about a year ago and have progressed immensely from the direction of their sensei and the dojo. They start out like everyone else with white belts, and have progressed to their current orange belts. I like that they have their weekly private lessons where they can learn the various forms, techniques, and get very technical in their practice. The more direct teachings from the private lesson help them develop their skills while the dojo also holds daily group classes. These classes occur throughout the week as well as Saturdays, and while I try my best to take them in to as many during the week as possible I'm not always able to bring my kids in. During these group classes they get to exercise and work on some group activities, such as group sparring, or punches and kicks on the pads. The senseis all know my kids by name and are very approachable, as well as when we could not make it to our private lessons due to vacation or illness we have always been able to request for a make up class and they are very accommodating with the rescheduling. If you're interested in putting your child into karate but are unsure if your kid is a good match, they do have trials which they will spend a few minutes with your child and work through a short private lesson to gauge their interest. Also, while my kids are not in tournaments, be aware you will have to invest a bit into their growth with sparring gear, outfit, and maybe the occasional long trip to a tournament.

I tried several gyms, but ultimately chose USSD Irvine Northwood because their program blends multiple martial arts styles and focuses on practical, tactical self-defense. Everything I've learned so far has been incredibly useful, and the instructors have been supportive every step of the way. I'm genuinely grateful to have found such a friendly, welcoming community.

Before signing up, we checked out a few other BJJ and Muay Thai gyms around Irvine, Tustin and Laguna Hills, and this one stood out as the best fit for kids by far. The staff is so professional and friendly, and the curriculum is really well structured. The demonstrations are clear and easy for my girls to follow, which made a big difference for us. Both of my daughters love Professor Mason and Panda and always tell me they're the best. One thing we didn't expect but really appreciate is the red card. My girls also do competitive swimming, so we travel a lot for meets, and the red card lets them train at other Gracie Barra locations while we're on the road. That's been such a nice bonus. We've already recommended Gracie Barra to our family and friends. If you're looking for a welcoming place for your kids to build confidence and skills, this is it.

One day, I finally gave in to his persistence, attended a trial class, and ended up signing up the very next week. Every day on the mat is a learning experience, and training at Gracie Barra has instilled a strong sense of discipline in me. The professors are incredibly kind and patient. Even if I've practiced a drill countless times and still forget a step, they make sure I feel comfortable and always guide me through it. I genuinely look forward to every class and deeply appreciate the amazing professors and training partners who have become friends along the way. I highly recommend this Gracie Barra location to anyone looking to start Jiu-Jitsu.
