I just worked in the yard for a couple hours for the first time in 8 weeks and feel no pain!! In…read moreJuly, I completely threw my back out, to the point that I could hardly walk, and it had grown weaker as I did things to push it in the years leading up to this. An MRI told me "flat tire between L3 and 4 and nothing between L4 and 5," (lower lumbar). Spinal surgery (NO), cortisone (NO) or pain meds (NEVER). After my visit to the hospital in May (that offered nothing but about fifty co-pays and a "healthy as can be" in every way diagnosis), I decided to try alternative medicine. Based on a YELP recommendation from the typical "guy," admitting that he didn't think it would help but went to pacify his wife and basically skipped out an hour after his first treatment, I decided to try Alternative Healing Works in Dyer. My journey started 7 weeks ago, and I have waited to write till now because I wanted to be fair in my assessment. For the last seven weeks, I have taken Chinese herbs, gone twice a week for acupuncture and performed acupressure myself, three times per day, according to the practitioner's assessment and instruction. In my first session, he asked if I wanted to relieve my symptoms or--by restoring the flow of energy--allow my body to heal itself. After the medical year I have experienced (I also broke my arm in Feb and had the worst case of vertigo in my life in May), I told him, I want the full Monty. I have followed his advice--all of it--religiously. And I have never felt better. In every way: physically, intellectually and emotionally. I feel like I have freed my spirit. You must take me with a grain, here. If you know me, you know I'm a little wacky (by choice), but my body tells me what it needs and always has (which is why I never get sick). It told me to try acupuncture, and this two-million-year-old practice is pretty miraculous. I knew it would be. One of the good things, too, is that Jason Wilson, M.S.O.M., L.Ac is a practical person who also lets the spirit move him. I have practiced creative visualization and Louise Hay (affirmations) for over 20 years, so I know I'm on the right path. He will answer any question I ask, but for the first time in my life, I simply let go and truly trusted the process. Is it my attitude? Is it ancient herbal and acupuncture techniques that have helped people for thousands of years? Don't know. Don't need to know. I'm just grateful. My body is healing itself on levels I could not have predicted. My skin is great. My headaches are gone. My arthritis is non-existent (I have to struggle to remember how awful I felt), and I am aligned with spirit. It has been what some call "a religious experience." I'm not a spring chicken, but I feel like one. What more can I ask!

I was skeptical about trying acupuncture - nervous how it might make me feel and concerned that it might be a waste of time and money. I am SO GLAD that I gave acupuncture a try, and I am fortunate that I selected Dr. Doshi. She has helped me relieve and manage stress and the physical toll it was taking on my body. She has helped my weight loss efforts by not only using acupuncture techniques, but also offering sound and helpful advice (I have lost over 20% of my body weight since I've started seeing her in August-2018). She has also helped me reduce sinus pressure and irritation that I routinely get from environmental allergies. She has the perfect balance between Western and Eastern medicines and practices. I always feel welcome when I go there and am in a better place - physically and mentally - when I leave. I consider her part of my wellness team. You would be better served going to a genuine provider who puts more emphasis on patient care and less emphasis on profit. I have been going to Family Medicine of Merrillville for over a year. I was originally in "Dr. Luke's" care. He is an LPN who got a job elsewhere and I was subsequently assigned to LPN Weronika Lugo when he left. I had two visits with Weronika Lugo. The first was on March 12, 2026. The second was on May 21, 2026. During these visits the subject of additional medications came up that I needed. When I asked about those Weronika Lugo's response was to "Take charge of your healthcare and do it yourself." This is a curious answer for a caregiver to give to a patient. Over the course of two visits she gave me this exact response at least six times to various questions. A reasonable interpretation is that she doesn't want to deal with me. And I'm fine with that. I started looking for another doctor's office. I started having problems getting my prescription refilled. After several phone calls to the pharmacy and the insurance company my wife determined that the prescription had been approved on the wrong prescription insurance plan that was employer based. The insurance company insisted on dealing with the doctor's office and it was not something that I could get done myself. The office manager's response at Family Medicine of Merrillville was to acknowledge that it would take an employee a considerable amount of time on the phone with the insurance company to get this mistake corrected. Then she said this wasn't an expenditure she was willing to make and if I wanted my prescription I needed to pay $300 to their office to get it filled instead of just paying the $25 copay at the pharmacy. That is when I knew for certain they really don't want me as a patient. Their main concern isn't the welfare of their patients. It is selling drugs out of their refrigerator for maximum profitability. I was prepared for indifference. But what happened when I went to a legitimate healthcare provider and left Family Medicine of Merrillville was entirely unwarranted. They listed my prescription as "no longer medically necessary" in my records to prevent me from getting it under insurance coverage at a pharmacy since I opted not to buy it directly from them. They did this in July when I had not had a visit to their office since May. I had already gone to another LPN for a checkup and gotten a prescription elsewhere. Family Medicine of Merrillville intentionally kneecapped me on the way out the door. I don't know if this is illegal or unethical but I am reporting it to whatever regulatory authority I can find whose jurisdiction covers it. My recommendation is a hard pass on Family Medicine of Merrillville. There are some good people who work there but the people who direct and focus the work don't have your best interests in mind. They are the kind of people who would have been selling Fen-phen out of the trunk of a car in 1995.
