Neill Wine

Hidden away in the sleepy seaside village of Groomsport is Neill Wines and perhaps Northern…read moreIrelands greatest selection of bottled craft beers. Neill wines is unassuming from the outside, located on Groomsport's Main Street it has limited branding and no flashy signs that give any indication of the delights that are inside. Much like a treasure chest it's only when you go inside that you are exposed to the vast bounty. The shelves are stacked high and deep with a huge array of craft beers. From local brews to exotic Caribbean beers this place has it all. Along side the traditional lagers they had a bargain bin with 3 beers for a fiver and being the adventurous type I choose 3 beers I had never seen or heard of before. I ended up with a coffee flavoured beer from Ireland (nice and local) and a pale ale from England that made my taste buds scream for more. That's the beauty of going to Neill Wines, it's a lottery and you might just hit the jackpot and come out clasping your new favourite beer. If you're more of a wine connoisseur then they have a huge selection for you too, not being a huge fan of wine I stuck to the craft beers but I noticed the wines were all shelved by region. Ask the staff for advice if you're not sure what to go for, they seem to know their stuff although I wish the attendant had of warned me that my coffee flavoured beer was more like beer flavoured coffee, anyway you live and learn. If you're a craft fan, as so many people are these days, I would suggest you take a wee jaunt down the coast to visit Neill Wines or look them up online and see what they have in stock you're bound to come across something new.

A really small and cosy off licence that is right on the Donaghadee Road in Bangor which means it…read moreis easy to get to and serves a large residential area. The stock in this place isn't as wide ranging as some of the other off licences in Bangor but this is down to its size. But the staff more than make up for this with their friendly and polite manner which make going into this small store always a laid back and friendly experience. The deals you get in winemark are pretty competitive and you should be able to find something that is to your taste. If you can't find it, they are usually more than happy to order something in for you. There isn't an ATM near by, but that is ok because they offer cashback when you pay on your card.

Located opposite Bryce park this off licence used to be notorious for underage drinkers. They would…read moreput on their Dad's shirt buy 3 litres of cider then drift into the park and then wonder aimlessly around the local area looking for "hippies" to "start on". But all this has changed Winemark now operates a strict challenge 25 system where they seem to be asking for I.D from anyone without a thick beard. The staff are pretty stringent on this so make sure you bring your driving licence. The shop itself has a great selection of beers, wine and spirits. It always runs promotions and just last week was selling 2 bottles of Buckfast for £10, to the delight of my mates. This fine tonic wine is often sold at a high price in other off licences' around town. Its drinkers are distinguished wine connoisseurs of the highest degree that have a taste for the finer things in life. Finding two bottles for £10 is considered a real coup so Winemark has won a few more fans recently. As said Winemark is a good off licence in a good location handy for grabbing a few beers before heading into town.

We would just get things a little cheaper than the usual punter. The selection in here is great, with a nice big walk in fridge that is usually stocked with plenty of nice beers and the like. The only problem is that they never have enough Sol, nor do they stock Tsingtao but that is maybe me just being overly picky. The staff used to be a little bit grumpy, but the newer staff are all friendly and helpful and up for a bit of banter.

The thing that keeps me coming back to Curleys time and time again is that they keep all their beer in a large cool room at the rear of the shop. There is nothing worse than turning up to a part with warm beer and there not being any room in the fridge to cool you alcohol. The selection of beer really is massive with anything you could want. They often have promotions on as well so you will be likely to pick up a bit of a deal. The other thing I really like about Curleys is that at the counter they have all the little bits and bobs that you could need for a good party. It helps to jog the memory, for instance they do limes to wedge in your Corona and they also have a stand of pain killers for the morning after. The convenience of Curleys is also great with an ATM just across the road and parking on High Street and a small car park on Clifton Road, a short walk.

A really handily situated and well appointed wee off licence right in the heart of Ballyholme. I…read morehave lost track of the amount of times I have been at parties in the area and have had to make numerous trips to this wee off licence to get numerous carry outs. The stock is pretty good with plenty of good red wine if that is what tickles your fancy. The staff are friendly and helpful and you can usually get what you want. If you can't they should be able to get it in from one of the other Winemarks in town. There is good parking nearby and an ATM, but if you pay on your card you can get cashback, which is really handy.

You know what you're getting with Winemark, a decent selection of your main beers, ciders and stouts, wines and spirits with good offers from time to time. The guys in Ballyholme Winemark know a decent bit about wine too if you're stuck and their staff have always been friendly over the 15 years I've been going here. I think it's the banter of the staff and sometimes other customers I go back for. They don't offer a breathtaking variety of spirits but I suppose they know their target customers well enough by now. Recently due to the boom of craft beers they've started stocking some terrific ones from the Hilden brewery which I have been sampling keenly recently as I'm slowly moving away from wild nights drinking Buckfast (which they sell by the barrel load). They also usually have free samples of wine or spirits on a Friday and Saturday which I think a lot of customers enjoy. There's parking right outside too and in the adjoining streets, a bank machine a few metres away and a Chinese takeaway and a supermarket right across the road for provisions for the evening and to line your stomach...!
