Let me give you some context. It was early February, and I was on the hunt for wine. That doesn't necessarily distinguish itself from any of the other days of the year, but on this occasion I was shopping for a valentine's day present. The idea was to gift her several bottles of wine, each one a bottle we'd had together somewhere before during the first few months of our relationship. I was pretty chuffed with myself for this idea - it was thoughtful, borderline romantic, and I got wine out of it.
The problem was finding the bottles I was looking for. They were very specific, and a Google search turned up empty. I could find four of the five bottles, but they were scattered throughout Melbourne, with one in Geelong. I was steadily resigning myself to an epic chapter to bring this gift together, when I popped into Wine Republic on Brunswick Street.
This place sort of draws you in. It beckons you. Not just because wine, but the aesthetics of the place are lovely. It's how bottle shops should look. Spacious, clearly labelled, exposed brickwork, masses of choice but not remotely overbearing. Staff welcome you and if you need their help, they know their vino.
So I'm in there, taking a casual look, and I spot one of the five bottles. So I pay more attention, and spy another. And another. At this point I'm whooping inside and willing this holy grail on to show me the lot. Two more to go, and after a hunt, I find a fourth. Unbelievable. The fifth appears elusive, but on walking in, I ignored all the Pinot Noirs immediately on the right (don't do that - there are some gems there). And there it was - the fifth bottle. Wine Republic only went and stocked the lot.
I can't praise this place enough. These wines weren't top shelf but they were lovely, and hard to find, let alone in one place. I shared the story to the guy on the counter and he was as pleased as I was!
Oh, and a walk down Chapel Street the other day revealed Wine Republic is now busy building a store on the south side, so good news for you guys down there! read more
