Ascot Racecourse - A Private Box at Ascot

One of those things you have to put on your bucket list. It was a real experience to visit and…read morehobnob with all sorts of Brits and quite a few foreigners. We saw the Queen and the Royal Family arrive (the Royal Races last Tuesday), and from out grandstand area we could see all the crazy wealthy folks in their top hats and tails - and dresses with elaborate hats or fascinators - losing their money just as we were losing ours. It was a fun day, everything there ranges from expensive to ridiculous but memorable. Allow plenty of time to get there by car, and consider taking a picnic - but honestly sitting by my car in the huge parking area and drinking champagne, while being cost-effective, didn't seem to "fit" with the ambience there. Although some guys in top hats were doing so! I guess the nouveau riche :) For my American friends, remember that grandstand in Britain means just that - STAND. After decades of softening up in the US I was thinking we would get seats - but no!! Will I go again - quite possibly - it was fun I must say.....

Really a fun experience even for a complete horse novice like myself…read more Dressing up, drinking and eating in a nice private box that we had was a great experience. Throughout the day I was betting on various horses and I only lost £2 after all, so got lucky there. Not sure how it compares to the food downstairs, but the food in the private box was quite good, and so was the service. I recommend going to Ascot to have a good time. I got here by taxi from my hotel, but from what I heard there is sufficient parking right across High Street in a large open parking lot. Also a good meeting point.

Epsom

This year was my second Derby Day spent on The Hill in the middle of Epsom Racecourse. It has to be…read morethe best free family fun day you can get, all for the price of a train ticket down to the course (we actually went down for a birthday so the daytime celebrations continued well into the early morning in Sutton)! I watched every single race, and there's nothing more fun than choosing a horse in the race guide and standing up with the rest of the crowd to cheer it on. My bets are only virtual, my cousin put down £14 and got back £5.80, but I prefer to spend my money in the rows of markets with fresh food, clothes, and other bits and pieces. You can get the usual greasy fun fair food, but we took our own picnic, including picnic blankets and sun shade tents - yeah we actually got a bit of a tan despite the few black menacing clouds! There are lots of rides within the racecourse, although the bigger ones are set up on the outside, and there's a huge music stage as well as karaoke performers throughout the market. The one thing I don't like is at the end of the day when everyone leaves the place looking like a pigsty, I mean c'mon the only reason they employ rubbish collectors is because the public are lazy and uncaring. It doesn't take 30 seconds to carry your rubbish bags to the big skips they have there. Just bin it!

I suppose if you are a race goer you would have this event on your annual event diary…read more If you are not then you might be tempted to put it under "One to avoid"? Friday is Oaks Day known as "Ladies Day" that does not compete with Ascot but try's hard too make a show with various popular music groups coming down later in the month. Of course The Derby now held on Saturday afternoon is the main Hullabaloo, when traffic helicopters and the entire populous appears to come ,well not everyone, not me now, why , well I prefer to watch the telly in the safety and comfort of chez moi!!

We booked a tour online. On the tour we got to see court 1, centre court, the press room, a roofop, and walk the grounds. After the tour we had tickets for the museum. The grass is absolutely breathtaking. I can't believe what great care everything is in. Especially after I toured the Australian Open in Melbroune this past summer. This venue is certainly the granddaddy of them all. I like how they leave the scores of the championship matches on the scoreboard all year. And then, throughout the park they have the entire bracket scores from every single match played during Wimbledon of that year. I liked all of the history and facts that they tell you along the way. The only downside is they need to give more time for photos. You'd get like exactly 1 minute for a photo and then get yelled at about moving onto the next location.

Was fortunate enough to score both Centre Court and No. 1 Court tickets for the same day! I should start with actually getting here. It's pretty straightforward. If you're taking the Tube, you want to take the District Line and the closest station is Southfields. Be prepared to walk though, it is about a 20 min walk to AELTC. You get to also pass by the Queue too...very fortunate I did not have to go through overnight camping at the Queue. I have nothing but amazing things to say about the facilities here. Even though it's a very very old place, you wouldn't be able to tell with all the modernization they have done here. Quite beautiful honestly! Centre Court is obviously where everyone wants to be, I do wish that the corridors were less tight but it is after all a very old structure in the first place. No. 1 Court is much more modern since it was built in 1997 and thus has more concourse space. But both have amazing leg room. Never felt more comfortable! Food options are plentiful. There are quick service options as well as three different sitdown restaurants that you can make reservations for. And of course, you can't come here without having the famous strawberries and cream! Every tennis fan must find a way to come to AELTC one day. It basically is a pilgrimage for tennis fans!
