If you enjoy short day trips that involve the great outdoors then Windsor Castle Park should be right up your alley. From my home in Virginia Beach it was around an hour without much traffic. I planned this trip on a day that my kids had off school. Unfortunately we got a much later start then I hoped and was unable to cover all of the park. Our adventure started at the Smithfield Station entrance on a sunny mid 60's afternoon in November. Immediately your taken with the beauty of the area. Not to mention Fall in Virginia made this a special day with the foliage unfolding right before our eyes. We took the trail up to Windsor Castle and explored the exterior of the old barns and even the house thanks to a super nice City of Smithfield employee in the home. I snapped some pics of the house and was surprised to find out it is to be sold off by the city to a private party. The structure has really terrific bones, but is in need of a few million to renovate. What was more shocking is the antiques that were located in the non climate controlled home. A pre Civil War piano was the most noticeable YIKES! The area to be sold off includes all the barns and vineyard. Before we headed into Smithfield for a tour we enjoyed going down to the water at a overlook area. The scenery is very stunning and on a warm Fall day was even better. What was very disappointing was the amount of trash every where just below where we were standing. Lots of beer cans, bottles and debris in this beautiful marsh. Trash was also on the decking area with a trash can just feet away. We cleaned up the trash on the deck before leaving. The city, or a volunteer effort needs to get this cleaned up. Most certainly we need another trip back to this park to take in all of what is offered. I hope the next time we return a serious clean up effort has taken place. I mentioned. It is also quite shocking that Smithfield is selling off such a treasure in Windsor Castle. I am unaware of the budget constraints, or politics of Smithfield to really say more than what I have mentioned. On this visit we only scratched the surface of this stunning recreational area. I like Windsor Castle Park - it's a cute and well-maintained popular walking trail in Smithfield right across from Smithfield station. Smithfield station provides free parking in a gravel lot across the street from their main parking lot. This park has several nice wooden bridges over the water and is a peaceful quiet walk around for about 1.8 miles through the wooded/water park of Smithfield. It runs parallel to Main Street at some points and intersects with a few neighborhoods via wooden bridges. It's really cute and has a nice shaded wooded part of the path as well as some sunny uncovered spots and tons and tons of marsh and water that looks like a Nicholas Sparks movie - it has a little something for everyone! read more

This is a nice place to take a relaxing walk on a beautiful day. There's lots of different places to go and explore, which makes it a great family activity. There are dog parks and boardwalks for fishing. The trails are also great for bike riding. Overall, if you're wanting to spend the day outside, this is a great place to spend it! read more

We are in love with this beautiful park! Even though it's a good 30 minutes away from our house we come here quite often. The part is BEAUTIFUL all around and in the very nice town of Smithfield. We love to walk through the trails and end up downtown, even get an ice cream cone at a shop downtown after sometimes. The park itself has a very nice dog park. We have never been in with our pups because you have to register them and have a code to get into the dog park. There is a picture from outside the park on my review. Kayak rentals are there Saturday and Sunday, fishing piers all around, playgrounds for the kids (which are interesting to me. They are built in to the hills. Featured in my pictures for reference as well). You can go any distance from half a mile to 4 or 5 miles. Great park! We will continue to walk here. read more

Love this semi-local park. Love Smithfield. If I'm coming to the town I will visit the park and vice versa. I have walked the trail many times and find the winding trail through shaded and full sun, through trees and open space to be a comfortable place to relax. The park has two parking entrances although one can be a little trickier. I tend to use the parking area across from Smithfield Station. The other entrance will bring you into the park and present you near the dog park. They have added kayaks to their amenities and a new play area for kids. There trail is made of crushed stone but in the past my cheap umbrella stroller made it through so all things better will have no problem. There are bridges along the way where I have seen many a turtles. I have even witnessed several deer inside the park. Everything is labeled and the map is easy to follow. I will be making a trip to check out the kayaks very soon. read more

I so wish this park had more of an actual playground. It was a "nature" playground made of different logs and a few awesome slides. Not toddler friendly whatsoever and kind of dangerous really! Luckily my son preferred playing in the leaves more than anything. Perfect park for older children who love the outdoors! There is a dog park that has a member side and a non member side which is great. Finally a place that you don't have to pay to bring your dog! This park was full of people including a boy scout troop. The porta potty's were clean and had a sink to wash your hands. The built in the earth slides were awesome! But not anything safe to do for smaller kids except maybe run around. There are many trails and we plan on coming back with our jogging stroller and dog next time! Very family friendly and there is something for mostly everyone...except toddlers lol. The other thing is that there was a lot of trash everywhere which made me sad! WCP is a great place to just walk, run, unwind. Has two dog parks; one for licensed and unlicensed IOW dogs. There are places to grill as well. The grounds are very well maintained. You can also fish off the pier or use the kayak launch. Love it. read more

Pleasant walk/hike area. There's a dog park area nearby too. I wouldn't say there is so much a castle (they don't really exist in the US), but there is a very large castle-like (I guess?) building. The walk is nature filled enough for those who aren't active hikers or outdoors people. Keep your eyes open for wildlife, particularly snakes on or in the trees. They like to hang out in the shade. The park wasn't particularly busy when we were there, but I could see it being that way during peak times, especially in the weekends. Overall, if it gets you outside and active, I don't hate it. read more

We love this park! We've brought our husky here to play with other dogs and the dog park is always clean and the people and dogs are friendly. There are walking trails and a couple playgrounds. There are large grass areas for sports too. The parking lot could be a bit bigger as I've had to park along the road before due to lack of parking spots but that's only happened twice in the four years I've been going there. This spot is a great place to walk your dog, go on a hike, and enjoy the wonderful outdoors! There are several hiking trails and a dog park along the way (you have to pay a yearly fee to use the dog park). My fiancé and I enjoy taking the trail that leads into downtown Smithfield for their local shops and restaurants! Most of the restaurants in downtown Smithfield have patio seating that allow dogs, which is a plus for doggie lovers like ourselves. Make sure you bring some water because there are no water fountains in the area. There is a water hose for the dogs and several porta potties if you need to use the restroom. The park recently added several slides and kid friendly activities. I would suggest to also bring bug spray! The bugs were very bad today! Other than that, this is a great location to walk your furry friends and enjoy Mother Nature! read more

I love this park!! Before it was a park, every time I drove by I'd stop and try to get a picture from a distance of the cool barns up on the hill with the marsh in the foreground. Now I can walk on cool bridges (docks) over the marsh and go right up to the barns. I was and am amazed at the workmanship done on the numerous pier type bridges built over the marshes and creeks. The trails are fantastic - smooth surfaces and great scenes to enjoy or photograph. Ive seen deer and otters and muscrat (or neutra) and lots of cool birds including Great Blue Heron, Egret, Red Tail Hawks and more. I have been here now a number of times and love it in each season. There are great restaurants at both ends of the park also - a great thing in my book!! Smithfield has always been a great town and now it has a fantastic park that is a joy to visit. I see Kayakers there and there is a dog park - but you havre to register your dog with the city to get in. There is a play ground near the dog park also. Love this park! We did almost 2 miles on the walking trails. I love the up and down paths. Very smooth and don't feel crowded even though there were a lot if people today. The mtn bike trail looks just as smooth. The dogs have a sweet set up for playing together. The kayak put in here is one of theft I have ever used. We will be back soon to walk again. If I lived nearby I would do the circle daily. read more

What a wonderful outdoor amenity for such a small town! I came here to help with a cross country meet that was hosted by Smithfield High School. The kids really loved the course as it was largely in the woods and a single loop (as opposed to multiple loops around baseball and soccer fields that they're accustomed to elsewhere). I had some time to run an outer loop of the trail after the meet and was impressed with the condition of the trail (crushed cinder) and variety of scenery- from fields to woods to the creek and the grounds of the homestead. The footing is smooth and the gently rolling hills and meandering offer nice variety. Aside from the meet, the main activity in the park on this fall evening was the dog park. There had to have been at least a dozen families there. I parked in the main lot off of Jericho Road, but there are multiple entrances that cross the creek into the main part of town. I took the dogs out for a day trip here. The paths are very nicely done and not very long, so it's a good place with kids, small dogs, older peeps and such. They do have a dog park, but you have to do paperwork, and license and get a note from your grandma's neighbor to use it, so we didn't. It is a pretty big dog park though, and if you are close though, it might be worth the trouble. It would have been nice to visit the buildings and such, but there was a wedding and it was kind of overrun. The directions on Google and wonky, so you'll need to look out for some rather small city signs to find the right way to go. read more

Great park in a wonderful little town! We were in Smithfield for the farmers market and decided to take our pizza over to eat at the park and then go for a nice walk. The park is well maintained and obviously cared for by those who frequent it. We loved the little benches throughout the trail that are positioned in places with a good view. We were even impressed to see a kayak slip on one of their boat ramps, which makes easing your kayaks into the water incredibly easy and seamless. This is the best thing that has happened to the county hands down. There is a kayak launch, walking trails, a dog park, biking trails, an orchard, a fishing pier, and they are in the process of coming up with plans for a natural playground. That was the only thing missing from the mix really, even then, I didn't mind it. The walking trails wrap all of the wonderful things I love about Smithfield into one. There are footbridges that take you over the marsh, walk beside the Pagan, and farm field with little farm out buildings. This is where Arthur Smith (founder of Smithfield) called home: Windsor Castle. It's a treasure and high class park that everyone in the family can enjoy. Awesome place to visit! The drive to the park is very pleasant with all of the Victorian homes in the neighborhood. The park itself is very family-friendly and Pet-friendly. They have a nice dog park for the animals, Porta potty's and water/soap for handwashing, and a playground for the kids. I really love the scenic trails that run through the forest at this park. I like how there is a variety of paths that you can take, including bridges that go over the marshes. It's fun to walk into town and grab an ice cream at the ice cream parlor. Another thing that's really cool about the park is that there is a second parking lot on the water where people can load kayaks, and more trails to walk. I definitely recommend this place!
