This reminds me of a dandelion that needs to be blown away. My favorite part is that it lights up at night. It looks spectacular then. The lights even change colors making it even prettier. So take a closer look instead of just ignoring it as you drive by. It deserves some attention.

Towering nearly 18', the structure has an organic look resembling a plant known as cow parsnip which is also planted in the park. The park is located on the Speedway Trailhead. The steel structure features LED's that light with various colors at dusk so that the blossoms light the night sky. This art installation has a related piece called "Beacon Bloom" in Carmel at the intersection of Westfield Blvd and 96th that was installed a year later. The installation was done in cooperation with the Arts Council of Indianapolis, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, and the Town of Speedway. This is a very colorful and eye catching mural that you will find on the side of Speedway tax…read moreservice. It is overlooking a parking lot which is good and bad. It is good because it makes parking here to get a closer look very easy. It is bad because cars are normally parked in front of the mural, blocking a decent portion of its lower section. The mural was painted in 2022 and is the collaborative work of Andrea Townsend and Chris Nusbaum, who was commissioned to do the piece by the Speedway Arts Council. Nusbaum, a Speedway Arts Council board member, digitally designed the artwork, While Townsend led the painting. You may not be able to tell, by how nice it is, but it is part of a community paint project. Over 250 people assisted with painting the mural. The mural depicts the words "Speedway, Indiana, Since 1926", set against a rainbow spectrum background. You will find a checked flag to the left of the words and a1926Indy Car, to honor the year the town of Speedway was incorporated, to their right. It is a very nice mural with awesome detail and artistic work. You will notice though that the 100 foot wall that the mural was painted on was not in the best shape to start with and not well prepared/preserved. Outside of that, I still like the mural and find it very interesting. I am also a sucker for community paintings. Anyway, as with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip.

Located in the heart of the racetrack, you can find a hundred years worth of racing gear, cars, and photos that document the evolution of the sport. The museum has been newly renovated in the past couple years and the experiences help you feel connected to the racing culture in the city. If NASCAR is more your speed (because they're not as fast as Indycars), they have a wing for that as well. Admission is around $20 per person, but students enter for $7 with ID. You can walk around at your own pace. I think I spent about 2-2.5 hours here and I am one to read about 2/3 of plaques at museums. One really cool thing worth doing if you have the time is to do a track tour. There is an extra cost, but you can drive around the oval and learn about the construction of the track and the surrounding areas within the Speedway. I went on one that stopped at the Brickyard, a stretch of 3 feet that still has the original bricks on display at the Tag Heuer pagoda. You can even kiss the bricks if you want! This review is a little out of date, but that just means I'm closer to my next visit!

When you first enter the museum, you stroll through a mock-up of the garages in gasoline alley. There are racecars from every era. The next stop is an open space with a surround video of the Indy500 experience. This would be a nice recap to anyone who has never been to the race. Finally you enter the main museum with three levels of exhibits. There are of course racecars, but also trophies, helmets, and other memorabilia related to the race and the track. I think race fans and non-fans alike would enjoy a visit to the IMS Museum. There is plenty to see and many things to look at with historical significance. It is also a good place to host events, especially for out-of-towners.

Montague painted a few other murals in the Cityway complex while she was here. This is an interactive piece that has been following a national Instagram trend. There is a set of big wings for adults and small wings for the littles. So, this mural is not very unique as you can find similar pieces all across the country. The mural is meant for you to stand in front of and give you the appearance that you have wings. I almost posed for one of those then I remembered I was a grown man with a little self dignity. Just kidding, the wings make for good photos. There are also a large mural of Indy native butterflies on the adjoining wall titled Shadowbox Butterflies. It is a very nice piece and goes well with this one. As with most murals I have visited, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. If you are quick, you could probably park in the CVS parking lot. You may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful murals in the area to maximize your time and trip. Luckily there are a lot of other interesting murals in CityWay to view.

It is the work of artist Jackie Head, who won the job out of 29 other applicants. Head specializes in 3D art and her work can be seen all around the city. Making this piece was no small feat. This is her largest project by far. It took Head about 5 months to complete. I remember driving by a few times on my way to catch a flight, wondering what they were doing over there. The mural is very colorful and eye catching and has colorful geometric patterns running its length. You will find one of the designs resemble a checkered flag (a nod to the Indy 500). Another resembles the rainbow carpet from the old IND terminal. The best view is from the road approaching the terminal. It may be hard to find a spot to park and enjoy the piece from there though as it is marked as no parking. You can also view the mural from the cell-phone lot. You can get a longer more stationary look from there, but it is like looking at a sweater from the backside, you can kind of see it, but it is not the best. The mural is intended to be viewed from the road entering the airport. I am not saying that I pulled over on the side of the road to get a quick look, but you will have to be creative to get a look from the road as the mural is intended to be. If you want to catch the mural, you have time. It will be on display for at least 3 years and do not worry about the cups that make it up. They will either be reused or recycled. I really like this mural. You do not see many like this. I could only imagine what it took to bring this project together. I understand that this is not a destination piece and would probably only be viewed by someone visiting the airport, either to fly out, drop someone off or pick someone up. I am glad that I was able to check it out and share my experience.
