You can spend a long time in here looking at all the details. There is an entrance fee. You can go in for free if you are there to pray. There was a choir practicing when I was there. This is the big attraction of Winchester, it's located just behind the high street and there is a big park next to it.

After the palace and chapel were destroyed by fire, St Lawrence Church was rebuilt in about 1150. The church was badly damaged by fire in 1978 and after restoration re-opened again in 1980. The exterior is just a doorway and a turret, situated on a narrow part of the passage running from the Square to the High Street. A small porch leads into the church, which is a simple space lit with an East window of five lights. The furnishings are simple and unremarkable, but look up the wonderful 17th century Kingpost roof. On the north wall is a mediaeval doorway, discovered in the 1950s. The chapel is open during weekdays for private prayer as well as hosting regular Sunday services.

The Almshouse, founded in 1132, is the oldest and best preserved in Britain, and is England's oldest charitable institution. Founded to take care of thirteen frail men and to feed a hundred poor men a day, it was extended in the fifteenth century. To-day it includes twenty five brothers, all pensioners (although they are not actually monks - they're all lay brothers). They wear the mediaeval style of robes of two orders which date to the founding in 1132 or the extension of 1445. The Almshouse still provides the 'Wayfarer's Dole' to visitors, if you ask for it: a horn of beer and a morsel of bread. As well as the Almshouse itself, the adjacent church is a magnificent example of late Norman romanesque, on a grand scale, with later gothic additions. The Almshouse also has a lovely garden, open to visitors.
