The Blaw-Knox Antenna historical marker is located on the property of the WLW transmitter. There is…read moresome space for parking so that you can read the marker easily. Just look for the huge red and white radio tower! The marker is in good condition and reads, "In 1922, during the infancy of broadcast radio, the call letters WLW were assigned to the station begun by Cincinnatian Powell Crosley Jr. The station moved its transmitting operations to Mason in 1928, and by April 17, 1934, WLW had permission to operate experimentally at 500,000 watts. Becoming the first and only commercial radio station to broadcast at this "superpower," WLW was formally opened at 500,000 watts by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on May 2, 1934. Using its 831-foot Blaw-Knox antenna to broadcast at ten times the power of any station, it earned the title "The Nation's Station." Locals reported hearing broadcasts on barbed wire fences, milking machines, rainspouts, water faucets, and radiators. The custom built transmitter, a joint venture between RCA, GE, and Westinghouse, remained in operation until March 1, 1939 when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ordered the station to return to broadcasting at 50,000 watts." The marker goes on to mention that it was erected in 2002 by Ohio Bicentennial Commission, The Longaberger Company, Mason Historical Society, City of Mason, Warren County Board of Commissioners, and The Ohio Historical Society. It is marker number 5-83. [Review 18020 overall - 166 in Ohio - 1541 of 2022.]

From…read morehere to Cincinnati is 25 miles and that's a nice distance for any railway, let alone one that was running in 1903. The front of the marker reads, "The Rapid Railway began operation in 1903 and was the Interurban Railway and Terminal Company's (IR&T) northernmost traction line. The IR&T began near Pleasant Ridge and Kennedy Heights in Cincinnati and connected to a street car line that originated downtown, on Sycamore Street, and passed through a total of fourteen municipalities. The interurban cars ran down Main Street through Mason before turning south onto Dawson Street, crossing Muddy Creek, and traveling to Kings Mills. From Kings Mills, the line continued to Lebanon where it terminated. The full ride from downtown Cincinnati to Lebanon took approximately one hour and fifty minutes." and on the reverse, "The Rapid Railway was vital to local munitions production during World War I. In 1916 the Peters Cartridge Company opened a new munitions factory on its site near the traction line in Kings Mills. Among other war materiel, the factory manufactured rifle and machine gun cartridges. Company advertisements noted the factory was accessible by interurban and workers were able to commute at a time before many owned automobiles. The IR&T abandoned the line in 1922, but it heralded a new era of mobility for the region and aided Warren County and the region's war effort." The marker was erected in 2017 by the City of Mason, Mason Historical Society and the Ohio History Connection. This is marker number 19-83. It is located on a corner so there is room to stop briefly to read the sign. I did not see any remnants of the line in the ground. [Review 18027 overall - 171 in Ohio - 1548 of 2022.]

When I finally did get inside to get my license plates the staff were friendly and did not let the situation bother them Even though I am sure people were less than friendly with them. Hats off to this branch and their people! Special thanks to Shannon for dealing with the crowds!

There is a big parking lot but there is also plenty of room to stop since there's no one else here right now. The marker is in excellent condition and reads, "During the height of World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt turned to the innovative engineers of the Crosley Broadcasting Corporation to build powerful short wave radio transmitters capable of delivering broadcasts overseas. On farm fields near Crosley's WLW facility, six 200 kilowatt transmitters and 24 directional reentrant rhombic antennas were built and on September 23, 1944, the Voice of America Bethany Station was dedicated. The first broadcast was directed at Nazi Germany and began with, "We shall speak to you about America and the war. The news may be good or it may be bad, but we will tell you the truth." For more than fifty years, the Voice of America Bethany Station delivered "truthful news" to the people of Europe, Africa, South America, and parts of Asia, despite some like Adolf Hitler who referred to the VOA as those "Cincinnati Liars." New technology and budget cuts resulted in the silencing of the Bethany Station in 1994."" So when NOAA was offering a Storm Spotter class i figured I needed to attend. This review however is about the Miami township facility itself. I got a little lost trying to get there. Being new to Cincinnati I am trying to take the back roads not only to get my sense of direction, but to find some DIVES! After finding out that i was on Highway 50 and not 28, i decided to break down and use google maps to finish the drive in. Once you get with a half mile of the facility there are clearly marked signs where the community center is. Was hard to see them after dark, but if you drove the speed limit you had no problems. It was a nice sized facility. Clean restrooms, vending area with the normal array of snacks. I however found a Sonic on the way in, that review will come later :) We meet in the Miami room, a huge meeting room with dividers and a kitchen! Seating was normal plastic chairs, they provided a projector and a screen which was nice. About half way through the lecture on thunderstorms the heater kicked on with a loud THUMP. I was cracking up, even the speaker from NOAA got spooked. Parking was ample and well lite. The county workers were very friendly in guiding us in the proper direction. This is a nice facility that is tucked off the beaten path.
