The man that dealt with me treated me like I was homeless, despite the fact that I was wearing a suit after getting off of work, and was very rude... He initially toldme he would give me $400, before I told him I had already received a quote from the Cash-For-Gold place... when I told him that, he went up to $600, but wouldn't go any higher, and was really cocky about the fact that if I needed more, I could just go sell it, instead of pawn it... I desperately wanted to keep my jewellery, so I pawned it, but I was treated with such disrespect that once I receive my items back, I shall NEVER return there again.

I travel from Toronto to Burlington, because he is simply the best at what he does, My most recent jewellery issue: my wedding band not only cracked, the exterior service was so mottled with microdents, two other jewellers swore it was impossible to fix. Heartbroken and hopeful, I took it to Silver and Gold. "No problem," we were told, despite it being the worst damage he'd ever seen (as if I worked in construction). Upon pick-up, my ring looked sparkling new, like the day I got married. You would never know just how terrible a shape it had been in. The prices are always fair, but more importantly, you can trust in the care for the craft here. I cannot recommend this place enough.

They put me in touch with the owner because I live out of town and assured me that we could do a Skype interview to get the bangles I needed for my wedding. After 3 weeks of back-and-forth and an e-mail chain 23 letters long where we would set up a time and Banglez would cancel (without ever apologizing!), I eventually gave up. The green bangles we did buy were beautiful, but I was prepared to buy so much more if the customer service had been even slightly better. They were by far one of the most difficult suppliers to work with for our wedding. So if you do purchase from them, I think that you will get much better customer service if you go in person.

I'd like to think I've formed a bit of a relationship with Henry Ho, the proprietor of Manning…read moreJewelry (Jewellery? Jewelery?). Over the course of five or six trips spanning approximately two months, we suffered through every minutiae of engagement rings conceivable: cut, clarity, colour, carats, metal, settings, prongs, etc. My god, it's enough to drive the sanest of men mad. Allow me to backtrack a bit. When I first started shopping for an engagement ring, it was a bit overwhelming. I thought to myself, "how on earth can I intelligently shop for this rock if I lack both the knowledge and tools to know and identify what I'm being sold?" To me, the biggest factor came down to trust; I was willing to pay a premium if I could trust that the seller wasn't giving me a CZ. Enter Henry Ho, recommended by my mother as a mainstay of Oakville Chinese moms (yes, seriously) looking to blow some cash. While his store at Trafalgar Village offers the usual array of gold, watches and knickknacks, Henry's patience and craftsmanship humbled me. With no opportunity for surprise left (or desired? haha), my fiancée (of many fleeting opinions) steered Henry as we: (1) picked out the diamond, (2) sketched up designs for the ring, (3) re-sketched designs days later when my partner changed her mind, (4) formed the rubber mould, (5) re-formed the rubber mould when she changed her mind, (6) repeat step five, and (7) finally arrived at the final product. Throughout the ordeal, Henry displayed his experience in the field, and offered helpful and useful advice to mitigate and manage my pre-wife's sometimes impossible design goals. In the end, the hit to my wallet wasn't as horrendous as it could have been (and I found Henry to be competitive price wise), and my girl's rock is enough to dazzle even the most ardent Holt Renfrew fashionista. Here's hoping she doesn't lose it.
