The number of times that elementary school field trips were had here. I can't begin to count them.
This place is neat although as a child it never seemed that neat. Since it was close by and visited so often I think I took it for granted. The historical side of this house is that it was the first brick house and racetrack(of the horse variety) west of the Alleghany Mountains. Being completed in the late 1700s, it was a gathering spot for people. Part of that gathering spot history is different now because a little over a decade ago, a lake was put in close by(Cedar Creek Lake). The lake is huge and had it been there in the 1700s, people traveling from the west would've been inconvenienced.
I was in the area recently and decided to visit. I need to make a return trip there to take some photos and tour the house. The house is simple but obviously historic. There is a gift shop also. The grounds behind the house are huge with a playground area. That's likely the reason we had so many field trips there. The teachers could let us run wild and watch all of us from on top of the hill.
There are also picnic areas and a picnic shelter. If visiting on field trips wasn't enough, I also had a birthday party or two here as a child! Apparently I couldn't escape this place!
If you're nearby, go ahead and visit. It's only 5 bucks.
I wish this place would take a cue from My Old Kentucky Home and decorate the house for Halloween and Xmas. I think it would draw in more tourists. read more
