2022-07-21. It's…read moreSunday afternoon in the quaint town of Albion, MI, and there are only 2 places open in the downtown area on S. Superior Street; Stirling Books and Brew, and Albion Malleable Brewing Co. After stopping by the Stirling Books for a coffee and milkshake, we decided to head to the place we knew would be open, the Public Park! A quick search on the internet led me to Victory Park. I'm not sure why this place is not on Yelp's map, but I added it, hence this review. Victory Park is Albion's largest riverfront park. The property could use some beautification, but it's still in good working order for the most part. The park includes a large pavilion that sits next to the 10,000 sq. ft. wooden playground structure (similar to Fort Fraser). There are vast open picnic spaces with BBQ's for public use. From the playground, I was able to see tennis courts, a baseball diamond, and a band shell that doubles up as a sheltered skating rink in the winter. The Kalamazoo River East Branch is the riverfront for this park, and there are walking paths and trails that are part of the North Country National Scenic Trail. This 4,600 mile long trail includes a variety of hikes, from easy walks to challenging treks. This trail links scenic, natural, historic, and cultural areas over seven states including North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, New York, and Vermont. The trail includes a variety of diverse features, from clear-flowing streams to vast prairies, to sandy beaches. Both a hidden gem and a diamond in the rough, it's worth checking out if you have little ones and are in the area. Considering the location of this place, it reminds you of the movie "Field of Dreams." There's an old saying "If you build it they will come and bowl." This is certainly the case with L&J Lanes. With high school bowling becoming a sanctioned sport in Michigan a few years ago, bowling centers have seen a dramatic increase in youth activity. Litchfield and Jonesville Lanes is the home to both school district's bowling teams. Likewise, this place is ideal for teachers to take their grade school students on an outing in the community, and enjoy an afternoon of fun, while exposing the kids to the sport for the first time. L&J Lanes offers party packages for kids and corporate events alike. They have 12 fully modern synthetic lanes manufactured by Brunswick, and a completely remodeled interior. The best part is they are smoke free!

The statue of Sojourner Truth includes a marker detailing her life and her journey, her influence on 19th century America and how she ended up here in Battle Creek Michigan. The park is at the entrance to Battle Creek where I-194 enters the city and becomes Division Street. There is some limited street parking. A disc golf course, fishing is permitted, grills, horseshoe pits and picnic areas near the playground. I did not see the Takaski Japanese Garden but that is apparently worth viewing.
