Wildom Farm produces lamb, beef, pork, and chicken and sells it from their small farm store on site in McHenry, MD. As you go down the long drive way you are greeted by two very agreeable dogs who are happy to have visitors. Julie will tell you about their regenerative approach on the farm that is also well described on the website. The offerings are plentiful and go way beyond the usual. There are Country Style Pork Sausages with just salt and pepper for those with kids who don't want the "spice" of Italian or Spicy Italian or Sage flavors. Beef and chicken sausages also available. I know where I will be shopping for Easter dinner with all the lamb options. This visit I picked up ground lamb for some Shepherd's Pie in my future. Julie also put me on to a boneless coppa pork shoulder steak that she said grills a lot like beef.
The farm does monthly informal cookouts in the summer where they are making sausages with what's growing at the time plus they do more formal kitchen takeovers at local restaurants. Subscribing to the newsletter is the best way to learn about them.
These meats are not cheap by standards of what you are going to find in the grocery store. But local farmer/entrepreneurs, ones who are adopting ethical and sustainable approaches with regeneration practices, are the ones I am willing to pay a premium to support. You know the products aren't jacked up with the poisons of modern farming and you are supporting folks working hard to do it the better way.
Wildom Farm is very close to some easy landmarks. The entrance is directly across the road from Mountain State Brewery where you really should get the mushroom pizza and sit on the porch to watch the sun go down over the mountains. And it is just a stone's throw from Wisp Resort and Deep Creek Lake. So if you are vacationing in Garrett County you are splurging already - add a stop at Wildom Farm so the grilling you do that night is extra special. read more
