The Apex Park is an informal leisure and wildlife park, created around the former clay pits - now…read moresmall lakes - of the Apex Brick works. The works closed in 1966, and the park was created and opened in 1972. The park, consisting of grassland, trees and hedgerows, covers some 42 acres. There are two main lakes: the larger, central one has an attractive hour-glass shape and its banks are lined with rushes. There are walks around this lake with park benches, and footpaths branch off to go to Highbridge (along the line of the old railway) and to Burnham's South Promenade, following the river bank of the River Brue (very muddy after wet weather!). There is a large car park off Marine Drive, which leads to a broad slipway into the lake. The other lake forms the park's north west boundary and lies partly within the Haven Holiday Village. Popular activities include BMX biking, model radio-controlled boating, jogging (there's a 'trim-trail' with various pieces of keep-fit apparatus) and fishing - the lakes are stocked with carp and bream. Dog obedience sessions also take place most Sunday mornings in good weather, and there's a children's play area and skate park. As well as the fish, wildlife includes birds, including geese, ducks, swans and various different types of sea bird, and the hedgerows contain a variety of different types of trees and bushes, home to insect and bird life. Dunsford Wood is owned by the National Trust. This stunning wood combines beautiful old oak…read morewoodland with hazel dotted about. We visited in mid April and were lucky enough to catch the last glory of a sea of daffodils covering the glade. There are 2 paths, a bridle path through the woods, but I recommend taking the lovely path along the River Teign. Some of the oak trees look ancient and wise and are covered in a thick fur like moss, I couldn't help stroking the trees like a dog! We were lucky that the day we went was a glorious sunny day which displayed the River Teign at its best with sunlight dappling off the water and the trees reflected brightly on the water. In places there are sandy river banks making little 'beaches' - perfect picnic-ing spot! Sadly we didn't see any fish which we were were surprised about as the water looked so clean. We did spy a couple of deer that were well disguised by the trees, you won't spot them unless they are moving and you are actively looking for them. We walked for 2 hours, to and back from our car, I'm not sure how long it would take to walk the whole route, we were most definitely ambling however as there was so much to see and do. The bluebells should be in bloom in May and I would love to go back and see them. Dunsford wood is a magical place, I imagine it would be special to visit at any time of the year.

We weren't out for very long, but kids are easily bored and for our £10 (one adult, one child) we came back with four fat mackerel for lunch, gutted and strung for us to take back along the cliffs to Seaton. On price alone that beats a supermarket, but we got a sea trip and a 6 year old thinking about food ethics and vegetarianism, too. She just wouldn't eat mackerel for 6 months afterwards.

Beautiful walks and plenty of parking - more expensive at the weekend, but fairly reasonable throughout the week. Lots of people take dogs there for walks, and it's fairly easy to spend a couple of hours there. Fishing nets for children can be hired from the barn to fish in a small pond nearby. There's also a river running through but to do fishing there you need a permit.
