Well you may think this is a biased report as this is my local however with all the great bars on…read moreGloucester Road then it must be my local for a good reason! Friendly atmosphere from the bar staff and people who drink there. Lots a great ciders on offer including a personal favourite of mine- Black Rat or "dark rodent" as I like to call it! Provides great pub food mostly personalised burgers however a delicious range of pieminister pies with lovely gravy! Karaoke nights on Thursday and Sunday, really fun pub quiz on a Sunday also! Fantastic juke box in which the taste in music is rock (by most of the bar staff) however there all different kinds of music to suite everybody's needs! Pub games including pool (80p per game.. Standard winner stays on rule, some challaging competitors lurking around I will warn you) darts and foosball which is both free. Love the fact it is a place where you can pop down on your own and chat with the staff and the locals, however is also a great place to go on a bar crawl or stay for the duration! 3 jäger bombs for a mere £5er which is actually cheaper than buying 2! Sky sports and bt sport with 4 screens. 2 beer gardens! Only bad thing to say is the place is a little rough around the edges however still gives off a great vibe and it works!

Obviously I can't vouch too much for the day to day running now (though it still appears to be run by some of the same people), but from looking at the pictures on the website, it's obvious that the facilities haven't changed a great deal. Outside there's two floodlit concrete courts, one for football and one for other sports (these were built in my day with grant money), plus a grass footie pitch. Inside they cater for the lazier sports, such as table tennis, pool and darts, plus there's a tuck shop and we even had a computer room where you could sit down and play Super Mario while eating bags of Tangy Toms (sorry, I seem to have turned into Peter Kaye!). This place provided some of the defining moments of my childhood due to the excellent facilities and efforts of the volunteer staff. If it's even half as well run now as it was then, it's a great place to send your kids where they can do some exercise and keep out of trouble.

In Swindon, if you are looking for a theatre, the main one that you will probably hear about is the…read moreWyvern theatre in the town centre, but lesser known is the Arts Centre, in Devizes Road, in the Old Town area of Swindon. This is a bit of a hidden gem. They have lots of good shows and bands playing. You can have a drink and generally have a good time. It is not a huge great place and because of this, it has a better atmosphere. You are never far from the stage and wherever you are seated, you have a good view. It is situated in a good area of town if you want to go to a local restaurant after the show, to round your evening off. There is car parking about 5 minutes walk away.

Fortunately the ground is situated on high ground so the pitches are normally pretty dry. They cost about three quid a head once you have a whole team there. The Redgrave is a charming little venue tucked away in deepest, poshest Clifton. Affiliated to…read moreClifton College, its main output is productions of classic plays (Shakespeare features heavily) put on by their drama school, which, if you're as deeply untalented as me, is quite depressing as the standard is so good. They also fill out their programme with equally good productions from local amateur dramatics groups, and even find the time to put on the odd national comedian. A very small theatre, it's usually busy and generates a good atmosphere, while the prices are pretty low (a tenner or less) for the standard on offer. Unless you're a real theatre buff who expects the best, this is a good place to catch cut price productions.

The price is extremely reasonable as well fo rent spaces. The one downside is that if you rehearse late at night then the heating isn't good, so wrap up warm. I'll usually turn up with a t-shirt, jumper, hoodie and coat as well as a scalf, hat and gloves, and if I stand still for 2 minutes i'll still feel the cold!

The Island is absolutely without a doubt my favourite venue in Bristol…read more The Island is run by Artspace Lifespace, an artist led initiative that recycles vacant, under-used and problem properties. They have sone a stunning job at revamping this old fire station. The walls of the Boneyard Bar are painted a bright cerulean and their are some stencils by the art tart above the door and day of the dead artwork on the walls. Artwork dons all the walls and every event is done differently. The Island is a huge complex, not all of which opens up. For some of the larger events, stalls are built in the large courtyard. Every event I go to, the experience is different. The Island is the HQ for The Invisible Circus, who undoubtedly put one of the most creative and interactive nights in the UK. I have seen the best fireshow, the best arial performance and had the best crumpets at the Island! Its a fantastic space and worth keeping an eye out to see what nights are happening here, from the spectacular carnyville, heavy metal acid panto to klezmer craziness, the Island is an amazing creative hub in the heart of the City.
