But especially for rap, hip-hop and R&B, the selection is very limited. 103 Jamz is one of the best and longest running rap, hip-hop and R&B stations in the area and I hope it continues its reign. With well known jocks, funny contests and local events 103 Jamz is a staple in the community. As a reggae lover, my radio selection is almost non existent and that's why I have to love 103 Jamz. Every Sunday I tune into Bad Joe and the Caribbean Shakedown and get a touch of the islands I've come to love and miss. Yes, even here the reggae selection is Americanized, static, standard and dated, but it's the best that we get. Reggae, Latin, Soca, and all the rest--they are playing it every Sunday morning until about 2pm. Again, this is like a starter kit for Caribbean and reggae music. It'll get you started, but you're going to have to tune into a local island station to know what's really hot.

But maybe I'm just getting old. I don't get much out of the Mike and Bob show either. Nothing against it particularly--a little juvenile humor is fine now and then. But I usually get bored and eventually change the station. I used to listen to Mancow occasionally when they carried his show in the mornings. I think he's on an a.m. station now. I do keep 96X on my saved stations for when I'm in the cock rock mood. If they happen to be playing music at the time, they usually don't let me down.

The music felt new and raw and the station was like the rebel radio for the conservative sound waves of Virginia Beach. Touting a Modern Rock Revolution, 96 X belittled FM99s classic and 80s rock sets and set out to find new and upcoming sounds to fill our ears. Now when I listen to 96X I cringe. Like MTV, I and many other's are asking 96X "Where's the Music?!!!" Every time I tune into this station hoping to hear some Phoenix, B.O.B. or even some Nine Inch Nails all I hear is Mike and Bob. Why is this show interesting/funny again? Two New York guys talk about mundane subjects such as "movies with lines in them" and they run the show for the entire day, with like 5 minutes worth of music every other hour?! What is this? I hate it. There. Play some damn music please. NOW!

I personally am not fond of the idea of a pride event however I did partake in joining the…read morecommittee to help plan and meet some of the community members. Now let me get one thing straight when I did say that I was not fond of the idea of Pride at first however working the event as a volunteer and also seeing all the hard work and dedication of the people who helped put this together with the passion of the community and the sole purpose for what the event represents really brings a different angle from a behind-the-scenes perspective. I did personally get a chance to work the block party and the team of volunteers were very friendly and helpful. The Pride event who was very well supported by the local community police which in recent events is a great site to see. One of the funniest things to walk into was a horde of protesters which I walked by and continued about my business and enjoyed the festivities. One of my favorite areas was the silent disco in partnership with Astro DJs. Put on a pair of headphones and switch between a red, green or blue radio DJ and listen and dance to different music that you can only hear and everyone else can only hear through their headphones so as you are dancing along you're looking around in the crowd to figure out who is listening to the same station as you but at the same time you really don't care because it's all about the music. Some of the food vendors were okay I tried one of the tropical food trucks the service was a little bit slow and the drinks were watery. The club stage I did not get to see however it looked pretty bad from when I walked by. I did like to see all the furries. The headliner, Grand Marshal, and opening act were very entertaining and gave a great close-up view to connect with the performer. My only side comment to that would be if the performer it was open for meet and greet and photos whereas one of them was but I did not know where to find them and the other one apparently was but you had to wait and I did not know. At one point during the festival one person had fell over and face-planted into the ground but it was great to see that the emergency personnel and police staff were there within a few footsteps too quickly and professionally respond to the situation. They do have a children's area which I did not get to see however there was also a LGBT history area with a quilt honoring the history of the community. This is a good event for people to be aware of other cultures within Society whether they do or do not agree with their beliefs but the people were very friendly and supportive calling out happy Pride to those that were passing by each other in support.
