If you needed to say HI or needed some help or If you wanted to share media or breaking news with folks in the Nex town or across the globe, your options were challenging and limited. Before smart phones, computers, tablets smart gear, there once was a world of yesteryear this was my world growing up as a child. There were radios, books, newspapers, magazines ,Telegraph, the mail system, ticker tape, vacuum tubes, steam locomotives, airmail, ground vehicle transport, carrier pigeons, Pony Express, drum beats, messenger runners. Smoke signals, bonfires. Signal flags, Morris code. The BAT signal and Long distance phone calls made by heavy old style rotary telephones that only communicated voices. .. they were not any computers or smartphones..yet. Marconi ..DID NOT invent the radio as we were all taught. "Nikolai Tesla" invented the radio. Marconi became noteworthy as a result of much publicised initial human Voice transmission. Marconi "borrowed" 16 of Tesla's patents to achieve this miracle. Tesla as the inventor of remote control, the Electric Armature engine and alternating current....had already sent much more important signals across the airwaves. WINS..1010 AM RADIO and the Myriad of other ways that we NOW communicate are one of the results of this simple man's innocent genius.... Tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick.. sound of the ticker tape stock machine.. Were some of my earliest sounds and memories of 1010 WINS. My Grandpa played the stock market and He always carried this small black GE transistor radio with him. He marveled at how small it was compared to the GIANT Behemoth radio that also sat in the living room that they had all listened to for many years. Pop loved his little radio and when he wasn't on in the car, he always had this little radio on even at the dinner table.. except for the baseball games.. WINS1010 was always on his dial. Grandpa loved the 1010 24-hour news format and the familiar sound of the ticker tape machine that he himself had before the Great Depression evaporated his Fortunes in moments. In the effort to stay ahead of the this time around, Popp needed immediate information. Pops was the first cable NewsTV Junkie before they're even was cable. It was like Grandpa's had the FIRST smartphone, he always knew before anyone, the breaking news ..he AWAYS had that little radio with him. My memories of Dear Grandpa and the ticker tape sound of wins are intertwined in my soul. I'm so happy this station is still around. As a result. I listen to WINS everyday. I have to admit I really don't care for the repetitive commercials you know car for kids ..mr. Pillow.. lawyer commercials medical commercials.. and they're the same ones over and over and over again. One of my personal dislikes are stupid repetitive commercials. Grandpa wouldn't recognize the new WINS without the familiar constant ticker tape sounds and with too many advertisements. Now in the age of digital Wonders, you can listen to ANY thing you want on your smartphone your Smartwatch, or any device you might have connected to the internet... ( also Tesla's invention) Grandpa' and his world are no longer.. and the technological visions of my childhood have come to pass in the form of computers, smartphones and flying cars. I'm happy WINS is still here.. and I listen on my flying car radio everyday, for the BREAKING news stocks, sports scores, weather... and of course to remind me of Poppa.
