THE CUDDLER
A very unique Schwarzkopf 'speedracer' steel coaster is still fun, enjoyably mild, and perfect for couples.
((for some reason, this coaster page got assimilated to the general park, so I had to recreate a listing. fuckin' Yelp, man. sorry to all those who lost their review in the process.....*SIGH*))
Do yourself a favor and ignore the ride stats on this one. 42mph top speed is small potatoes in comparison to just about every other major coaster in the park, but aside from the venerable 'Demon', this is one of the park's two original marquee attractions from 1978.
The distinctive electric spiral lift slowly pulls the in-line train up to 70ft, where it disengages and makes a gradual drop into an area of Hometown Square dominated by trees. 'Whizzer' is also partially built over water which gives it an added touch of woodsy elegance.
Ground-hugging turns pack some dandy positive G's throughout a few helices, notably the first couple. Noisy old fin brakes are used just prior to the station, and there's a MCBR, though it doesn't slow the train down by much.
Originally, this ride operated without restraints of any kind! No seatbelts, nada. Can you believe that shizz?? SO many idiot people nowadays would end up in the murky lagoon as they tried taking a selfie while standing.
Back in 2002, Six Flags needed to tear down an old coaster to make room for a new thrill machine, and 'Whizzer' was targeted for demolition. The public shouted "aww heeeellll naw bitch!" as this ride was beloved by many.....eventually the decision was made to dismantle the Arrow mega-looper 'Shockwave' instead, citing its declining popularity and high maintenance costs.
As sad as I was to see that magnificent blue & white 7-inversion monster demolished, I'm very glad they kept this sweet slice of Americana. It was my first roller coaster and makes for a splendid ride with your loved one. In fact, given the in-line seating arrangement, I have to give this the unofficial title of "most cuddled-on ride" at Six Flags!
'Whizzer' is an American Coaster Enthusiast landmark (received a plaque in 2012) and has provided guests with smiles every year for the past 41 seasons. This one-of-a-kind terrain coaster should not be missed on a trip to SFGAm; it's a true classic in every sense of the word. read more
