    lava rock beach

beautiful, lava rock beach off the 11 not far from Punaluu black sand beach. saw some campers with tents right on the beach. there's a few different little spots here: a pond, picnic tables, an old pier. not crowded. amazing sunrise!

    Little cave, hidden gem!

Little cave found by the stone pillars. Kind of dangerous to get to because you have to either time the current of the ocean and walk across slippery rocks or climb up and down the stone wall.

Our family of five from Texas and Oklahoma visited Oahu and the Big Island for Spring Break! We were doing some geocaching while driving from Hilo to Naalehu, and one of them was at Whittington Beach. Made a quick stop to tour the area and ended up spending about an hour at the park! The views from this area are absolutely gorgeous!! We walked along the lava rock and walked to where the old pier was. We saw several crab in the water at the pier. Nice stop to stretch legs and look at the ocean!!

Great beach with calm swimming ocean pools - well kept grounds and an old pier. Lots of seating under trees over looking the water. Most people just fly right by headed to Punalu'u- but it is definitely worth a stop! Go right passed the pier and see the lava tube!

    Tranquil ponds.

Do not skip this spot. Great picnic area, restrooms and some historical treasures to dig into.

Believe it or not. This place exists. From the outside, it looks really unapproachable but it provides for fun (and dangerous) opportunities to hang out with friends. There is an old pier that's completely broken down by the rocks, it's possible to climb on the broken pieces but be very careful of the possible high tides. Hopefully I can attach some photos!

The drive back to Hilo from the South point gave us a killer overview of the waves crashing against the giant black rocks at the park. At first we parked at the immediate parking lot on the left, but we quickly realized that all the action we saw while driving down from the top of the hill was towards the back of the park. A short walk from your vehicle to the back of the camp/picnic area will yield the splendor of powerful waves relentlessly beating against majestic black rocks on the beach. This part of the park is NOT for swimming or exploring. The waves WILL F@CK YOU UP!

Lava rock shore, cool caves on cliffs. Caves have faces. Small areas for swimming. Grass areas and good parking. A lady was feeding the cats and mongoose.

My wife and I found this place as we were driving to the volcano park from Kona. The views are nice but the water got a little rough so you definitely don't want to be too close to the water if your climbing on the rocks. Seemed like there were plenty of locals there, many people camping out in tents. All in all a decent place to stop and stretch your legs.

This place is stunning. A wonderful stop to stretch on a long drive or even better, grab a picnic bench for lunch!

There are several hikes from short and easy, to all day loop hikes. Nearly all of the hikes traverse grassy trails, which is easier on the body than the a'a lava on many of the other park hikes. We started with the Pu'u o Lokuana loop and diner cone hike which is 2 miles in length and very close to the visitor center. This hike has a huge variety of landscapes and plant life starting out with a somewhat arid first 10 minutes, then quickly goes to grassy tree filled areas, then lava, then an old 1940's airstrip and finally up to the red cinder cone for great views of the various meadows. Next we took the 4.9 mile Forested pit crater trail which was really stunning. The Pit crater trail is uphill the entire way to the crater with a very steep section at the beginning - not for those with a lack of training. The vegetation changes subtly along the way with great views and the crater is very large and goes straight down. Pictures of the crater do not do it justice as you need to see it in the full context. Highly recommend this portion of the National Park

This protected bay has over 120 species of resident fish, and usually has clear water. Other than urchins (7 species) there is no marine life to worry about. Turtle sitings are more likely at high tide when their salad bar (the algae on the rocks) is available. Typically from 9 to 3 daily the Reef Teach volunteers have photo guide books and other reference materials available, along with free advice, defog spray, and reef-safe sunscreen. Water access is the narrow and shallow rocky channel in front of the lifeguard station by the parking and pavilion. Swim fins or sand shoes are recommended. The locals value their feet and swim through it even at low tide when it is only a foot deep. Coming back in you can actually swim all the way back to the sandy channel. The water is usually noticeably warmer and clearer away from the entry. The bay is shallow with only a few places that are even 8' deep at high tide. Unless you really need to, don't stand on the bottom or coral - fins and feet damage it.
