Eva Turner is a small neighborhood based school. We have a great staff with little changeover (which certainly benefits the kids) Some of the best teachers and staff - Mrs McGowan and Mrs Hoza (K, with over 30 years experience) Mrs Scott and Miss Michelle (Pre-K) Ms Matari (art) Mrs Rios (Parent Liasion) Mrs Kazim (PTO pres) Mrs Penny (school secretary) Mrs Cherry (counselor) Mrs Wray (library) Mrs Freundel (reading) Mrs Corsey (speech) Our parent volunteers (which includes me!) are awesome. Volunteers help all the teachers and staff - which free's the teachers to focus on the kids. There are plenty of things for volunteers to help with (so keep this in mind with your own childs school) Eva Turner has several after school clubs: Art, Chess Math team, Destination Imagination, Just Say No and Band. We are a Title 1 school - which is great for everyone. The school offers several parent classes every year and activities for families. There are only 2 buses and several daycare vans this year - the rest are walkers. Next year we are getting an additional 140 kids, so there's going to be buses. (but our school will still have less than 500 total) We have recently had upgrades to our school (a beautiful wing including new K and Pre-K classrooms and kitchen) smartboards in the classrooms (what a great concept). Our school is poor, 75% qualify for free lunch and we are always in need of donations. Ooops, now it seems like I writing a bad review but we've been here 5 years so far and I wouldn't change it. if we could.

Georgetown Day school (GDS) has given Beauvoir a worthy challenge for best playground in the DMV with this gorgeous and challenging wooden structure. There are three distinct playground all offering great slides and challenging climbing. My four year old loved it but needed a lift on many of the climbing features. For a 6-12 year old this is close to perfect. Lots of huge slides and climbs. There are also some features you rarely see like a waterplay area with a pump. There's a nice basketball court with some stray balls if parents get bored. Gorgeous school too

If you are afraid of homeschooling, don't have enough time to homeschool, or don't think the school is doing enough, it is a perfect way to supplement your child's education in the fundamentals. When you start, you will be surprised at the basics your kids are not getting at school. I have also found that the schools jump around a lot, not reinforcing the things covered so kids don't get a clear understanding. The individual attention they get in class is a good start for the work the kids have to finish throughout the week. Your kids may not like it at first, but as their confidence grows even they will see that hard work at home pays off in the long run.

The…read moreclassroom sizes are small, so he gets a lot of 1:1 attention, and it's super clear how much his teachers all know and care for him. His days are filled with a good balance of play and structure, and I leave him there knowing he is safe and cared for. As a parent I am appreciative of how responsive the administration is, as well as the extra activities the school brings in as an offering to the kids. As a working parent, its not easy to juggle extra-curricular activities, but I want the enrichment for my child, so I'm thankful he's been able to take soccer skills sessions and try out karate classes, all on-site and during daycare hours. She amazes me with the things she learns every day. The classes are small so she gets hands-on attention from her teacher, but she also gets to know all the other teachers very well. The teachers are caring, patient, and wonderful. I thought she would be intimidated by the pre-school environment and having the lunch room on a different floor, but she loves the fact that she gets to "travel" to different classrooms and eat with everyone. The playground is huge and completely shaded too.
