Saint Michael's seemed to be a clearing house for mentally unbalanced nuns who could only scream to communicate and hit any and all children for anything or nothing. The nuns were the bullies and we had no one to champion for us. I'm glad to see it has been dragged into the 21st century. Real education vs. what we got. Bitter? You bet I am. I will give credit that I learned enough Latin ( pre-Vatican 2) to serve me to this day. My first grade nun was Sister Regina Angeline, who must be best friends with Blessed Mother....sweetest nun ever. Kudos to Sister Carmen, the 8th grade teacher I wish I had.Another sweetheart. Academically, each of our girls has grown tremendously. The teachers are not only dedicated and knowledgeable, but they also genuinely care about the students. We were looking for small class sizes and found it here. This has allowed for personalized attention, and we've seen huge improvements in both confidence and understanding across all subjects. What really sets Word of Life apart is the well-rounded education they provide. Our girls have had opportunities to explore music, drama, and sports, which has helped them discover new passions and develop valuable life skills. My oldest daughter was able to preform in the school drama, while my youngest attended art club. My middle child found a new passion for basketball. The current principal presents as a kind person in public meetings, when the Pastor is around, and I suppose for parents of younger children. Her entire character changes, once you make it clear that accountability should go both ways. The principal is easily offended, retaliatory, and prejudiced-at least 3 parents have shared similar experiences. She is unwilling to account for various family experiences, and communication styles. During my time at the school, my children experienced various forms of discrimination regarding discipline policies, grading, and access! The middle school program is very poorly managed. The academics, elective courses, and overall teacher effectiveness are seriously lacking. I have only experienced 1 solid core teacher (who really should be the lead), and MAYBE 2 solid elective teachers. The students are not treated with respect or trust. Some wealthy families have their student's poor behavior excused, while other families are consistently mistreated. When brought to the attention of the principal, she sits quiet in meetings and allows the middle school "lead teacher" to lead any outcomes down a destructive and non truthful path. The Principal and many other staff members have difficulty holding this middle school lead accountable. Inasmuch as parents want to be involved as partner's in their children's learning, this school only allows that if you are agreeable with everything they currently do. They have handpicked the parents that receive patience, kindness, and grace. They have also handpicked the parents who will receive resistance, retaliation, and prejudice. None of which represent the Christian character they claim to lead in. If you are a parent who asks questions, and expects accountability and respect to go both ways-this is NOT the school for you. I think the only reason they have the enrollment they do, is because they keep their tuition lower than the Christian K-12 School that is one block away from them. They are basically undercutting a nearby school. You can see both schools from the road and many families need the tuition costs to remain affordable. Unfortunately, what you are getting in return is a hypocritical school, who claims to love Jesus and lead with love, but when challenged, are the furthest away from demonstrating that when it matters most.

The Grand Slam Concession Stand (baseball concession stand) has the usual hit dogs, pizzas and hot…read morechocolates and even cup of noodle, but apparently, they have a supplier of home made empanadas complete with a homemade spicy mayonnaise. These empanadas routinely run out before the game ends because they are THAT good, the volunteers working the stand are some of the friendliest parent volunteers running a concession stand. This is borne out by the fact that there are alumni who sponsor different innings even though they have long moved out of the area. Impressive in so many ways. Most high school concession stands have joyless packaged foods that are the antithesis of homemade. It is a testament to Annandale High School's athletic boosters and specifically their baseball team volunteers to have added this delightful twist to the usual high school concession stand fare.

I have not been to an…read moreactual service but I got to experience the church on a Monday night at 6:55PM just like I would in Winter Park at my home BSF class. One of the best things about Bible Study Fellowship International is that there will always be a class to join as a guest if you are traveling, any where in the world. In just about every major city all over the world there is a BSF class for both men and women. This awesome church happens to be the host facility for a men's Monday evening BSF class for the DC area. The wife and I happened to be there for a wedding. Knowing well in advance that we would be away, I searched online to see where the closest men's class would be for the week we were up there. Cornerstone happens to be just 8 miles from her aunt's house in Arlington where we were staying so it was perfect. I just did my normal weekly lesson where we study verses and answer questions each day and it's the same format. I have found that most of the men's classes meet at the same time and same day all over the country, Monday @ 6:55PM. Makes it easy to remember and I can stick to my normal routine even when I am traveling for work, or in this case on vacation for a friend's wedding. We meet in the main sanctuary (anywhere from 200 to 450 men, depending on the size of the city or area you are in) sing a few songs, say a prayer, then break into smaller discussion groups. All week long we are on our own with the bible and daily questions. In the small groups it gives us a chance to bounce ideas off each other and talk about the tough questions together. A lot of times someone will say something and it just clicks or they might have the same exact answer as you so it's neat to see what the other guys have for their answers. I love visiting random classes because it's a whole new batch of awesome christians that happen to be from all walks of life (doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers, you name it). After going through the entire lesson and sharing the different answers we pray for each other then head back to the main sanctuary and meet as a large group again. We usually sing a couple of songs as everyone trickles back in. There are a lot of discussion groups because it's only about 10-15 people per group. The host churches always have a bunch of Sunday school classrooms. Cornerstone's classrooms were nice and the main sanctuary was nice too. Once we all get back to our seats we listen to a lecture about the same material, then on the way out we are given a little packet that usually has about six pages of notes that are about the same material. The last page has our next lesson readings and questions for each day for the coming week. It's a great way to learn. I wish my college classes were this thorough! It's a four step learning process. One, you are own your own during the week, each day, reading scripture, answering questions about each passage. Two, you discuss the questions in a small group sometimes getting personal or very challenging when it comes to application and hearing other personalities answer the same question in a different way. Three, hearing a full blown lecture that kind of feels like a sermon from an educational standpoint from someone that has spent over 20 hours during the week preparing the material, which is all from the same scripture we just did our own and talked about in our small group. Four, you get to read five or six pages of notes on the same passages that are written by scholars with multiple PhD's in theology from the BSF headquarters. After each week's lesson and going through all the steps you really get a better understanding of what you just studied. Each year is focussed on one area. Last year when I came here to Cornerstone, we were studying Genesis. This year we will be studying Matthew. The BSF calendar goes along with a basic school year. It usually starts just after Labor Day and runs through May, usually taking some breaks for holidays but still getting about 30 lessons in. I love BSF and I love traveling and meeting new people. All the men I met that night in Annandale at Cornerstone were really cool and I would recommend this church to anyone that lives in the area. The facility is great and the people are very nice. If you are interested in BSF, check out their website for more info and start studying the history book of life! You won't regret it. Thanks to Cornerstone for being a great host church! The 10:30am service has more people so it can get noisy, and they sing hymns. Nothing wrong with that. I just prefer the quieter atmosphere. Saturday at 5pm is another full but good one to go too. Now, I am a little upset with the 12pm daily mass which takes place Monday-Friday. The parishioners just don't turn their cell phones off. This is 30 minute service, TOPS, during the week and every time, someone's phone goes off. It's disrespectful to the church, the priest, and the people there trying to pray. I feel like standing at the door and confiscating phones. 30 minutes without your phone apparently is too much to ask for.

This gorgeous church is one of Annandale's historic gems & one of the oldest buildings in…read moreAnnandale. The history runs deep on this building and way too long to write here, but some brief points include that the church was rebuilt in 1870 after the original Annandale Methodist Episcopal Church was burned down during the Civil War. During the Civil War, Annandale formed part of the protective perimeter surrounding Washington; positioned squarely behind Union lines the entire war. The church has simple sanctuary with beautiful little stained glass windows, wooden pews, pulpit, & floors. A belfry with the original bell is on display in front of the church; this happened the bell became too heavy for the building structure to support it. The church was also the first public school in Annandale and at the time it had a potbelly stove and a dirt floor. In the basement of the church, there is a small museum with historic items on display, including a portable field organ a Bible from 1867, old liturgical paraphernalia, news clippings, old maps and memorabilia from Boy Scout Troop 150 which, by the way, is still is a very active troop in Annandale today & still hold their meetings at the bigger brick AUMC church right next door. Next door to the church is a small, historical cemetery with Civil War soldiers buried in it as well as founding families. There is also a little building next to it that supports ACCA, which host a food pantry & also provides a variety of support for the surrounding community. This little historical church is very near and dear to my heart because I got married there, and my son was baptized there. We wanted a small intimate church & this was perfect! It is generally closed for daily operations but does open for certain holidays and special occasions.
