Another sightseeing opportunity you may see here in southeast Wyoming is part of the Oregon Trail…read morehistoric legacy. It may not be as intense, but it's part of American history.
Register Cliff is a fixture in American history because of the westward expansion of the United States of America in the mid 1800's, when many people were at a crossroads of their lives and wanted to live out their lives out west in Oregon and California. It's basically a limestone cliff that's not particularly important on face value, but there are supposedly names and dates carved onto the rock itself from travelers who have traveled the Oregon trail and left their mark. It was interesting to see many names and markers that were etched on this cliff, but was disappointed that there were names and dates that were as fresh as 2013 on the cliff itself. Some people just can't leave stuff alone and need to do that for fun. There's no noteworthy thing if you muck up an historic piece of property. It's just sad, depressed and disappointing really, but what can you do really.
The overall experience here at Register Cliff was pretty nice, educational, and very quiet & casual. I was glad that it was about 3 miles away from the Oregon trail ruts memorial, so It was an easy drive for me in the middle of nowhere southeast Wyoming. The nearest town would be in gournsey, which is a small town off of I-25 when heading in and out of Fort Laramie, Wyoming. Being that this place is a historic site and all, I was surprised that there was nobody there to collect admission fee. So, it was essentially free to visit, which was awesome. Plenty of parking here, so that's usually not an issue for anyone. It's not like anyone is clamoring to get here lol. Best bet is to rent a car, since I am not sure if Amtrak remotely comes through this place. Maybe stop in Cheyenne but that's it.
For the most part though, the experience here is uneventful and educational while historic and spiritual too. It is always nice to gain time humanity and a sense of purpose while visiting these. There is a restroom here on the premises, which is nice. That's about it really. There really is nothing else to see, but a small mountain with names carved up on it. I was upset that there was fresh names and dates scribed to the wall when it should have been just the names of the travelers on the Oregon trail. I guess some people couldn't help themselves and they just wanted to be famous or something. Still, coming here to Register Cliff was nice and it's something to see while in southeast Wyoming. You should come here if you are a history buff and like to see the Oregon trail stuff that has been preserved throughout the decades. The drive from Denver is about 2 1/2 hours one way though, so it'll be a nice drive North from Denver on I-25. Id recommend coming here, if you are nearby and want to spend time but not money seeing something historical on your journey in southeast Wyoming. Safe travels.
4.0 stars for the entire experience. While disappointing, the fresh names engraved on the cliff didn't dissuade me from hating the time spent here.
