Thankfully, they allowed our family of 4 (in a truck camper) to use one of the 3 remaining group sites. The remaining 2 group sites filled in within 30 minutes of us arriving! I would highly recommend getting there earlier in the day to ensure a spot. There is also a KOA at the park entrance, so if you're scared of not having reservations, consider the KOA. Though definitely not as pretty of a site. The campground itself was very pretty, clean, and again - the amazing view of the tower! They do not sell firewood, so you can buy it at the KOA at the park entrance. I recommend!

Review Visit: July 25th, 2015…read more If you have seen Close Encounters of the Third Kind, then you are very familiar with Devils Tower. This was about the final stop on a 2 week cross country trip and I am happy it was one of the last. We didn't get to get close, as we were tight on time, but still seeing it was awesome. I didn't know too much about it besides what we talked about in Geography classes in college, but I knew some of the legends and the uniqueness of the tower. It appears that there are trails around the tower you can hike. You can also climb the tower too, which is weird, since I thought it was all protected grounds by Native Americans. Maybe it's a limited window each year. Either way, if you can indeed get close, I would love to go back. I love odd, natural landmarks like this and would love to explore it up close. Wish I knew more to tell you all but maybe one day I can expand upon this post! Devils Tower is quite the landmark. It stands out when compared to everything else around it. It's also known as Mato Tipila or Bear Lodge. It is a butte, laccolithic, composed of igneous rock in the Bear Lodge Ranger District of the Black Hills, Wyoming. It is 1,267 ft above the Belle Fourche River, standing 867 ft from the summit to base. Native American people, believe that a group of girls went out to play & were spotted by several giant bears, who began to chase them. To escape the bears, the girls climbed atop a rock, fell to their knees, praying to the Great Spirit to save them. Hearing their prayers, the rock rose from the ground towards the heavens so that the bears could not reach the girls. The bears, left deep claw marks in the sides, which had become too steep to climb. Those are the marks which appear today on the sides of Devils Tower. When the girls reached the sky, they were turned into stars.

Revered by local native tribes, these magical natural rock formations are worth exploring. A neat spot along the way south of Wibaux as I was making my way towards Devils Tower. Low rolling…read morehills and not much else going on with barely another human being passing the other way for a long while, and then suddenly these massive rocks are popping up out of the landscape. I had to stop and investigate. "As fantastically beautiful a place as I have ever seen," said one of its first tourists in the late 1800s, a young rancher named Teddy Roosevelt. And there's a guy who knows beautiful places. The park is self-service with envelopes at the entrance where you're expected to fill out your details and put the entrance fee into a lockbox. As much as I was tempted to explore, I knew that I had a busy day of driving ahead. As well, I was alone and there's no cell service out here so if something happened, it might be a while for help to come through. So I took some pictures at the entrance and then a few more from the road and moved on. There's a very helpful spring at the entrance. The water tasted crystal clear.
