Any music lover will adore Marbecks. You get that feeling of being in an actual place when you visit, rather than in just another cloned merchandising experience. You also get a real Alice down the rabbit hole feeling because of the wonderful range, and it's one place that actually makes me feel excited about buying music. The staff here are excellent and great at fielding all kinds of questions, and very accommodating to importing things especially for you and that kind of stuff. They also have a dangerously tempting range of books and a decent stock of vinyl, so there's a lot to keep you busy once you get there.

Alien Records is run by what I can only lovingly describe as music nerds, one of whom will never fail to ask you if you play an instrument. This is endearing the first time but less so after the fifth or sixth. It's full of oddities, hits, classic hits compilations, and lots of top quality new pressings. I'm always slightly amazed they're still in business as it's got to be the most hidden specialty shop in Auckland, but they do know their stuff and it's good fun to spend an hour or so rifling through the bins so unless your ears are made of stone you're bound to find something you want. They also sporadically hold gigs in the room next door.

Also I am a nerd and a bit obsessed with music, so music shops in general are just neat, in my opinion. Musiquarium satisfies all my requirements. It's small, has little natural light, and is painted a lurid shade of green. Also it has an excellent range of CDs, both popular and obscure. Their stock covers a range of music, but seems to be particularly extensive when it comes to 90s alternative rock and 50s/60s rock & roll (disclaimer: it is possible that it just seemed that way because I like those two styles). They also focus on New Zealand music in a way that other places would like to look like they do, but actually don't.

These guys have some pretty good deals that can sometimes even beat the other gaming giants like JB hifi and EB games. They have a fair number of games for sale as well as some other game related products like figurines and other collectible stuff like that; you know, nerdy stuff that you don't need but want anyway. This store used to be located in a really hard to find part of that ridiculously designed Metro building (seriously it's so stupid with its escalators that miss out entire floors!), but thankfully they are now located on Chancery Lane) . The Christian Resource Centre sell mostly orthodox Christian books, under a banner of sections -…read morebibles (of course), a wide range of children's books, (and some not too heavy handed of the faith, eg. picture story books of C.S. Lewis' Narnia tales), biographies, (even Oprah has cashed in on writing one about her take on Christianity by the looks of it), plus lots more. They also stocked quite a range of CD's and DVD's on the shelves, none that particularly caught my eye, but there is obviously a market out there for that stuff. A few bookmarks and crucifix's with aphorisms that you probably would give as a gift. The lady behind the counter was friendly and unobtrusive with my browsing when I was in for the first time recently. I was a bit disappointed to not find any reprints of ancient Christian texts, such as the Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Truth, etc, or texts on theology, even some information on comparative religion has a market and would have been nice to see.

What you probably don't know is that a guy operates out of an office here a few times a week and has an amazing outreach to the homeless of Auckland City. He teaches them, feeds them and sometimes helps them find work. On the day I went here with some friends, we met this guy (who's name I can't quite recall) and he told us all about what he does and the impact he has. He also offered to pray for my friend who was travelling to Thailand the following weekend. It's that sort of love for humanity that makes you realize this guy is the genuine article and walks out his faith. It challenged and inspired me. Hope you bump into him. If you don't, there's some great stuff to look at here and enjoy. Don't expect to be blown away my the decor, but these guys have been around for a 150 years, so they are probably due for some redecorating.

A friend and I went to the cafe to have a coffee and talk about what had happened the previous night. Out of nowhere I threw up all, luckily enough we were outside. The staff quickly came to my aid and I cleaned up the ground. They were lovely about it which surprised me. I would've slapped aomeone for throwing up in my cafe. The second time I went there was to rent a few Dvds for a cosy night in with the boyfriend. The cafe has a dvd rental facility which is awesome. I walked away with a few dvds and two large takeaway vanilla milkshakes which tasted so good. The third time was when I had a meeting to pitch an idea to someone. We sat down and the waitress came to us and rudely announced that we had to leave because they were having family issues. I understand that it was a crisis but she could've talked to us in a manner that wasn't rude and dismissive.

It was cozy with chair and carpet, plus shelves area organized and clean. The shop has tons of old NZ military memorabilia, which was also fun to see. The cashier was welcoming as well. As I didn't want to carry a bunch of books all day, I left without anything but memories. The world needs more bookstores like this one. If you find yourself in the area, be sure to stop in and have a browse. They also have a bunch of sale carts outside on the sidewalk, a fun way to get you inside.

This shop claims to have the best selection of used books in Auckland, and I know every seller of something claims to be the best but on this occasion I don't just think their blowing smoke out their asses, this really IS the best selection ever located in the best store ever! They have over 20,000 different titles to choose from, from general fiction to the specialty of this store, military tomes. The owner even goes as far afield as Melbourne on stock missions so you can be guaranteed to find some really priceless items. Overall one of the best things about this store I think is the range of super comfortable looking places to sit down ;so you are actually able to read instore if you want to, a concept foreign to most bookstores these days. Being a hardened book lover myself, I have whiled away many productive hours in this store. Even better on late Night Thursdays they have a 10% discount and a free glass of wine while you are perusing the shelves!
