One man took the initiativ to seek the history of Phoenician culture in Western Sicily. He built himself a villa on the island of Mozia and started to dig. It was a huge success. His name was Joseph Whitaker. His initiative makes us understand the great influence the Phoenicians had on the development of European culture. Drive about 10 km north of Marsala and catch the boat for a 10 minutes trip out to the small island of Mozia. The old villa is today a museum of fantastic quality. Here you can learn that the Phoenicians came from Egypt and founded several settlements along the Mediterranean cost. You can also walk over the island and witness how it was once inhabited. The water to the mainland Sicily is very shallow and here you can still watch the old road from the island (the oldest you will find on earth). I´ll say it clearly; going to West Sicily without a day on Mozia is a mistake. My pictures show you why, as well as what has been written here. read more
