Update: I've continued having the lovely, low-key Sharon trim my hair as I grow out my curls, and she's now keeping it in shape at this length. I cannot believe the difference--my hair always looked like a frizzy, frazzled mess when it was long and wavy before; I definitely didn't have defined spirals. No difference in product or regimen. The only difference is the cut! ***** I have wavy hair that looks fairly curly if I scrunch it. I was hoping a good curly haircut would bring out the curls even more, particularly in the back where it always lays a little bit flat. Sharon was great to consult with me about what I was looking for and gave me a fantastic cut that made my curls spring right up and lay beautifully! I'm really pleased, especially for the price! I had an ok experience my first cut and color with Amanda. She seemed preoccupied and at one point I was under the heater she left for an extended period and when she came back her coworkers commented they thought she went home. Ended ok, she did a good job on the color. She asked I text/call to schedule the next appt. When I called she didn't responded so I called the salon and left a message, still no response. I gave it a few days and text her seeing if she got my message she said she was out of the country on vacation, still didn't offer an appointment. I recently found myself really wanting to go back to my short hair - and finally (professionally) get all of the red dye out! I used to live near Whimsy, and looked them up on Yelp after driving by a few times. I was really impressed to find that they had 5 stars - something that seems difficult when you're working with a person's hair. After looking over their price list, I was further impressed. Great service at a reasonable price - could it be true? Being from a small town, I love the atmosphere in Whimsy. It's a very "neighborhood" type salon, where folks come and go and everyone knows your name. The salon was clean, but nothing too fancy. Again, I was totally okay with this because it's what I'm used to. Despite that they welcome walk-ins, I made my appointment a few days in advance, just in case. I arrived about 10 minutes early and Amanda was ready and waiting for me. She was welcoming and very friendly. We assessed my hair together and decided on a plan of attack. I wanted to take 7 or 8 inches off and dye it back to my natural (dirty) blonde - and Amanda sold me on adding in a few highlights for some added pop. She was friendly through the whole process, chatting with me about my life and my hair :) It took about an hour and a half, start to finish, and I am so happy with the results - especially with the highlights! Amanda did an amazing job matching the dye to the color in my roots, and the highlights were perfect. And she cut the length to exactly what I was picturing! Hair Disaster! I made my appointment based on the yelp reviews... It took 24 hours for a call back from the office after my first message, I had tried to get an answer during that first day, but no one answered the phone at all when I called the office even though they were supposed to be open. When I spoke to Sharon the following day, I told her that I had heard Kayla was good with short cuts and she gave me her cell number, that took another day to hear back from her. I sent her pictures of what I wanted, then we set up an appointment. I texted her shortly before my appointment time to let her know I might be a few minutes late because I had gotten lost on the way, she replied that she also was running late. I ended up waiting for her 10 or so minutes, so we got a late start. I went in with past the shoulder length hair looking for a cut like the photo I'd sent... I had more than enough length to get what I was looking for, but not after she cut it. I ended up with a wedge cut in the back. As soon as I felt my hair I knew she had done it wrong, she tried to fix it but it only got worse... she did offer me a guarantee for the first week following the cut, unfortunately after the awful cut she gave me, I just didn't trust her to try again. Now it will take me months of regrowth to get the cut I was hoping for. To say that I am disappointed is an understatement. read more

I found Whimsy after I ran a google search for "curly girl" which was a concept I learned about only yesterday. The reviews left by customers for Whimsy were, without exception, totally fabulous and I found myself wondering how anything could be that good.....so here is the "rest of the story". I called the shop number and spoke with a young lady who was super gracious, and gave me the number of the shop owner since she herself was not going to be there on Tuesday. I called Sharon (the owner) and after speaking just a few minutes I knew I was on the right track. Sharon cut my hair today and it was the most fun I have ever had while getting my hair cut. Not only that, she experimented on my hair for me and even though my hair is curly she used a straightener mostly to show me what else I could do with my new "do". After getting compliments galore from my friends at the Boise Coop I came home and washed my hair to see what it would do on its own. Without any exaggeration, Sharon gave me what is without a doubt the best hair cut I have ever had. I cannot stop myself from preening when I look in a mirror now, much like that male swan at the Sun Valley Lodge - I don't know if he is still there or not, but he definitely loves the mirror they put out there for him :) Sharon's shop is a very special place. All those other reviews? They were completely on target! Thank you Sharon! I moved to Boise about a year ago and was hesitant to get my haircut at a new salon, so I often found myself putting it off until I took a trip back home to see my usual stylist. Last week my hair was driving me crazy and it got to the point where I couldn't wait anymore. I had heard my friend rave about Bless from Whimsy A Salon, and after consulting the amazing Yelp reviews I decided it was worth trying. I called to set up an appointment on Tuesday and was able to get in Thursday for a haircut and eyebrow wax (which was awesome for an impatient person like myself). When I arrived for my haircut I was greeted by Bless, who was so friendly and immediately put me at ease. Before even shampooing or picking up the scissors, she took the time to ask questions about my usual hair routine, what I was looking for, etc. and we were immediately on the same page. During the cut, she walked me through everything she was doing and made sure I was on board. She did things to my hair that I literally did not even know were possible, like thinning my roots to get more volume and adding texture by cutting my hair along my existing waves. I had never had a stylist put that much care and attention to detail in cutting my hair, and it made a huge difference. She then dried and styled my hair, giving me a few ideas of how to wear it through the process and then she showed what she was doing so I could emulate the curled look at home. I waited a few days to write this review to see how the new cut would stand up to the many ways I wear my hair and I would honestly say this is the best my hair has ever looked. After she was done cutting my hair, Bless also waxed my eyebrows and that was great as well. It was not painful at all and they looked very natural after she was done, just with a cleaner shape - exactly what I was looking for. Also, throughout the entire process Bless was so friendly and easy to talk to. I had such a great time chatting with her, so it was great to find a great personality and a great stylist all in one. All and all, the entire trip to the salon for the shampoo, haircut, style, and eyebrow wax cost $35. This was so affordable for a graduate student like myself who is on a strict budget, so I was so happy that I could get such a high end haircut at such a great price. I will definitely be going back to Bless for as long as I live in Boise and would recommend her (and Whimsy A Salon in general) to everyone I know. read more

I have always had long hair and wanted something simple and low maintenance. We went with an A-line bob and it looks great. I can wash and go or style as I choose. After a butchering hair experience at SB salon, I went to Whimsy A (per yelp reviews) and had Amanda attempt to fix my butchered A-line. She did an excellent job blending it in until we can get it to regrow and then we'll shape it. My mom ended up getting a longer A-line and she loves it! Looks years younger too! I've recently moved to Boise and decided to try this place. I won't be back. I brought in several pictures of my last haircut (how I like it) and described it to the stylist (Amanda). I got a 10 minute haircut that looks absolutely nothing like the pictures. I then asked her if she could please take it shorter, give me more layers like the picture, etc, so she messed with it for another 5 minutes and told me it was done. It is still very long and has almost no layers, and it looks nothing like the pictures. She was a nice person, but I'm not happy with my cut. read more
