Highly recommend. Very professional and knowledgeable. I've purchased a variety of kite related…read moreitems from them. I've bought lessons, two kites (and was talked out of the more expensive option), a board, and 2 wetsuits-one was a shorter. The shop is small but they pack it all in. If you don't see something--just ask. They're also always happy to give pro tips and share experiences.

From the road, you see a sign for Hatteras Island Surf Shop, looking like just one of many others…read morein the area, although perhaps a little more welcoming in a down-in-the-mouth way. But then you pull through a cul de sac, around a fence, down an unpaved stretch of gravelly grass, past a bunch of old cars, and arrive at a big, unpainted, wooden house. Gear is strewn everywhere: kiteboards, kayaks, paddleboards, and who-knows-what-else. An old man sits amidst the clutter, screwing a new top onto a kiteboard, and glances up at you. A tired, old, golden retriever waddles over to investigate. [You pet it, which it permits, but it keeps its composure.] "Do you rent kayaks?" you ask dubiously, unsure whether he is a proprietor, a hoarder, or a repo man. "Sure. $15 a half day." Without signing a contract, waiving any kind of liability, paying the man, or even telling him your name, you set off in a wobbly but seaworthy sit-on-top, joust with some kite-surfers and explore a nearby promontory. It is a lovely day to be on the water. When you return, the man is nowhere to be found, and therefore nowhere to be paid. You debate whether to leave the money under the door (which door? there are too many). You could tuck it into the dog's collar if he had a collar. Or maybe the whole experience has been a mirage. At that moment the old man reappears in a battered white van, happily takes your money, and you reenter the real world. Surreal experience; highly recommended.

If you are reading this review, then I ASS-U-ME you are considering going Kayaking when you visit…read morethe Outer Banks. A warning to all those of you who have never Kayaked. DON'T go anywhere else. Ben Cobb is a young family man who is an EMT Fireman with all the precautions for any mishap and is an INCREDIBLE GUIDE. My girlfriend and I (we are over 60 and retired) have never Kayaked and Kathie is not a strong swimmer so she had her reservations when Ben was taking us on the Alligator River Tour. She had friends who fell in and had bad experiences when they went Kayaking; please don't let me get started on them haha. YOU WILL NOT FALL IN!! Unless you don't listen to simple instructions. "Put your foot in the middle of the boat and sit down". NO ONE FELL IN and there were 6 yr olds paddling themselves (i don't advise this} Ben had to Kayak 3 miles while towing another Kayak. He did it with pleasure. I do strongly recommend watching a few YOUTUBE videos to get acquainted with how to steer it; how to get in and out, but if you have ever been in a Canoe or Row Boat, it's not rocket science. Anyone can do it if they have a couple of ounces of coordination. You won't see any Alligators, unless you are lucky like we were. YEP. An 8 ft alligator; looked like a mom guarding her babies, on the banks barely visible. How scary right? Not at all because Ben explained in the begginging what to do. NOTHING. They don't bother you; UNLESS you don't follow simple instructions like the young girl didn't do and started paddling toward the alligator. Alligator came into the water a few feet and she got the warning. That's it. Too bad we didn't see the Black Bears that sometime hang out in the trees. I don't write reviews for my health. I love reading good reviews that paint a picture so that is what I am trying to do. If you are thinking about Kayaking then call Ben. I'm sure that there are other competent guides, but why take the chance. There is absolutely nothing he could have done to make it more exciting and enjoyable, from the protein bars, water and Gatorade to the frequent stops for an education. THANKS BEN!!!! Kathie wants to buy a tandem Kayak now. She LOVED IT!!

We did the Alligator River Wildlife Refuge kayaking tour and it was great. We were able to see…read morebears on the way in and at the parking lot on the way out. We had a large group so the gators we pretty quiet during the actual kayaking, but what a great experience on the river! It was beautiful being in a natural environment. It was s remote location, there was no one else on the river. Ben had a wealth of knowledge about the flora and fauna. He was extremely accommodating and so nice. I would encourage anyone to take advantage of his services.

I reserved equipment online 2 days before our planned arrival with no indication there would be any…read moreproblems. The morning of our check in I received a phone call telling me that the equipment I had already paid for was not available, which left me no time to make alternate arrangements. The employee who contacted me was incredibly rude, and offered no apology. She seemed to think she was doing me a favor by offering a refund and was argumentative. A simple I'm sorry would have been appreciated. Not a place I'd recommend doing business with.

** AVOID THIS COMPANY ** If possible, I'd give ZERO stars…read more I rented a beach wheelchair for my father and aunt. Had it delivered to our hotel and when the delivery person showed up, they had no information on where or who it was to be delivered to. During the week we had it, we locked it up in a public area of the hotel (as instructed by the rental company) and when the delivery goons came to pick it up, they cut my $80 bike chain lock to retrieve it. Never called me (the company had my cell number) and never checked with the hotel front desk or asked them to call our room (the hotel is small and they knew we were the only ones renting a beach wheelchair). What's worse, however, is the delivery goons lied about who cut the lock, blaming it on the hotel maintenance staff. Fact is, they never even spoke with the hotel maintenance staff. But the coup de grâce was when I spoke with Nicole, the manager at Moneysworth Beach Rentals - an oxymoron if ever there was one. She was rude and attempted to blame me for locking up the wheelchair. She took ZERO responsibility and pointed the finger at me, the hotel maintenance team and the hotel management team. She contradicted herself repeatedly about their delivery person trying to reach me while in her next breath telling me they don't share customer contact info with their delivery people. I had rented the same equipment from them for two years prior but this will be the last time I will ever do business with them. **AVOID THIS COMPANY ** PS and by the way, the manager of the Surf Side Hotel felt so bad about our negative experience with Nicole and Moneysworth that she comped us super late checkout (5 PM) for the afternoon. Now THAT is customer appreciation and they will have my business each and every time I visit OBX for vacations.
