WHSmith is a really large company, with a large amount of stores in the UK across high streets, train stations and airports - This branch is there main store serving Cardiff city center, on Queen Street, fairly close to Next and Primark.
This store is a decent size over two floors, I only decided to look around the first floor on my visit, this store felt a little old, and not the nicest of branches and definitely in need of a revamp, which based on other reviews is something which has been needed for a while, with these or similar comments having been made as far back as 2010.
There was an issue with the fridges on my visits, which didn't work, I didn't like how the drinks were presented, with one open fridge which wasn't working, and the rest in a covered one, which seemed dirty/steamed and was hard to tell what was there, without opening every one, which was a bit of a hassle.
The staff seemed nice enough here, they did have a good selection of some items such as the lever arch folders, however these are a WHsmith product and just seem low quality, for example I have been through ten of them, and they have all seemed to break, which is ridiculous for £3.99, even more so when they used to charge £4.99 for a good while.
This store did seem quite mishandled as well when queuing, there weren't enough tills and it got really cramped, I didn't notice any services such as lottery being advertised to be sold here, which normally is something in most, if not every WHSmith branch and it put me off queuing with the whole situation, even just to ask meaning I had to go elsewhere.
The store is a decent size, but due to the layout and how busy it can get, and this old-fashioned store struggles to handle it, and technical faults, I sadly feel this store only deserves a single one store, and is also in the wrong location and would be better placed right inside the large St David's mall. read more
