I'm a longtime listener, but now I can't listen to it more than once a week, unless I'm listening to one of their "shows". The music is amazing, but they play the same stuff over and over and over. It's one thing to hear current stuff too much - i can cover my ears through Kasey Musgraves, or whatever her name is. But I played my high-school favorites too much in high school and need to listen to them selectively now. I don't want to hear the Pretenders or The Cars every time I turn on the radio. Also, they ruined my Friday nights by pushing Delphine Blue to Saturdays (and disrespected the legacy of Rita Houston in eliminating "The Whole Wide World"). Fridays used to be heaven - for so many years! I suppose all good things must come to an end. read more

Station is for music discovery of old and new music with WAY Above average quality tunes. I view this station as an irreplaceable, no garbage- advertising, adult Music source. Quality everything from Sunday PM to the Rest of week variety from popular 60s beatles and Rolling Stones and moody blues to 70s reggae to any/ all performers from the last 50 years. You're making a mistake if you don't sit back and listen or just let it play in the background. Won't hear a single Advertisement other than for concerts public events and the like in the nyc region. Falling down fast. From none of the hits all of the time, Its starting to go pop. If I hear Alisa Ali play " cheating on you one more time" I'm gonna scream. Im changing my car radio so I Can stream more progressive rock than I'm getting from FUV. Early morning used to be good but now it's boring banal interviews. Tuned into Wxpn from University of Pennsylvania. What a breath of Fresh Air! Used to love their something old, something new something borrowed and something blue format. I'm a huge, huge, huge fan of satellite radio. I am actually willing to pay $13 a month to listen to radio, because free radio nowadays is just god awful. Have you heard Z-100 lately? But if there is one last bastion of good free radio, I would like you to turn your dial to the left, all the way down to 90.7 FM and there you will find WFUV, operating out of Fordham University. I've been listening since I was a kid, because on Saturday nights there was a call-in sports talk show that was great to listen to. It was hosted by a couple of Fordham students, namely one Bob Papa. Name sound familiar? It should, because he does the radio broadcasts for the NY Giants now. Nowadays I listen to WFUV online, on wfuv.org, because I can't get reception in my flat and at work. The music that is played is so amazing and eclectic. Everything ranging from Tom Petty to Bob Dylan to Radiohead to Keb Mo to She & Him to Rilo Kiley to James Brown to Norah Jones. As a matter of fact, WFUV was the first radio station to play Norah Jones on a regular basis. WFUV even has some of the DJ's I enjoyed listening to when I was younger, like Vin Scelsa, Dennis Elsas and Pete Fornatale. All in all, just about THE best radio station in New York, and one of the best in the country. read more

This is a damn good radio station and I say that as a pretty harsh critic. I don't listen to radio very often anymore because it has just become so awful but WFUV has restored my faith in the medium, even if it is "listener supported." An NPR station that plays music that I actually want to listen too? Heh, I'm only sort of kidding on that one. Member supported, independent radio is underrated - no commercials, just music and interviews and NPR. Don't expect to hear too much of what's playing on the commercial stations - no hip-hop, techno, or anything too heavy. At the same time you'll probably never hear the serially over-played Hotel California and its counterparts on this station, but if they did play it, they wouldn't t play it five thousand times a week like other stations are compelled to do. If I could tie this song to a cinderblock and send it to the bottom of the hudson river, I'd do it, and then I'd do a little dance - just a little one. What will you hear on WFUV? Local artists, international tunes, legends, and live performances. The program that keeps me coming back is Vin Scelsa's Idiots Delight. Vin's been on the radio in NYC since the sixties. Over the years he's conducted interviews with some of the greatest artists and musical legends of our time. Rock, swing, bluegrass, punk, jazz - its all over the place, but it works. I think this is what is so fascinating about Idiots Delight and about WFUV as a whole - you find music that you wouldn't find elsewhere on the radio, transcending traditional categories and time and even space-time. The only other public station that might hold the higher card is 91.2 WFMU - they broadcast out of Jersey so there is no promising your radio will pick it up, but WFUM has more punk and experimental offerings. Its got a a little more edge. Check out their site for programs - so far I'm favoring Dave the Spazz, but I know there is much more that I haven't gotten around to appreciating. It's so refreshing to get a break from the rampant redundancy of the other major stations. Listening has been a musical education.

This is the only station all my radios is dialed or preset to. Fuvboat is always a treat or the dance party as the alternate .

This is one of last radio stations in NY where you can hear live DJs who interview musicians and play Classic Rock, Jazz, Folk and some ethnic stuff thrown in for good measure. Operated by Fordham University with NPR making regular broadcasts, I can get my daily fix of non-top 40- Beatles, Radiohead, the Dead, Elvis Costello, Gomez, and so much more... read more

For a non-commercial station on the left end of the dial, they are fairly disappointing relative to what they could be. The DJs obviously exert little in the way of creative input over the programming, as with the exception of the weekend specialty shows, they all just ply along with the same repetitive and constricted playlist. Frankly WFUV may as well be automated. You will not hear deep tracks on this station, as they only seem to fork up a few top songs from any given artist, and the list of approved artists is itself fairly truncated. Yet, they come across as being quite full of themselves in their promos. While the ossified playlist may be different from a top-40 commercial station, is almost in a way just as limited. Do not tune-in expecting WFUV to be either free-form or progressive. It is with the exception of the weekend shows (e.g.: Cavalcade, Mixed Bag, etc.) sadly predictable and bland. read more

I'll follow Vin Scelsa anywhere - I've been listening to him since 1975. But now that my local radio station has been taken over by zombies (KFOG in San Francisco) I find myself listening to WFUV as much as the wifi access allows. Never fails to please, inspire, and surprise. Apparently WFUV is the last bastion of great radio out there. Let's appreciate her while we can. read more

They are a good station in general. However, they are also a very stingy lot. They always want money flowing in, but never willing to give a dime flowing out. They won't return calls, emails, texts, etc. if you ask them for a contribution. Very one sided. I no longer support the station and know many others who feel the same way and discontinued their support for the station. That's what happens when you act like a miser. I enjoy listening to FUV, and will continue to do so for free. That's $500 a year that I used to donate. Now $0. read more

Radio sucks in NYC. Except for one station. And I do not want to pay for good radio. I have too many other expenses like trying new great restaurants recommended on Yelp. That being said, WFUV 90.7 is the best. Their DJ's are the best in the industry. They have turned me onto more new music and I hope they can keep it coming. Monday through Friday I listen to Claudia Marshall, Darren Devivo and Dennis Elsas ( from the old WNEW FM station) to name a few. The weekends are filled with great music as well. Saturday nights have Pete Fornatale's Mixed Bag and Vince Scelsa's Idiot's Delight. They just added Marshall Crenshaw's "The Bottomless Pit". This is free form radio at it's best! FUV sponsors many concerts throughout the year. Since this is public radio, if you become a member by donating money, members have the ability to pick up free concert tickets from their member line. Still better than anything else in NYC, but that's not saying much. Very repetitive, with a definite hit rotation. They should aspire to be more like KCRW in LA; that's what public radio should be like. Not: Kurt Vile, Tame Impala, Elvis Costello....G.
