Home to office spaces, a brewery (Upright), the Leftbank Cafe, a shared office space (the Hive) and a communal area, the winding, maze-like structure is home to a colony of progressive workers, projects, and all sorts of stuff. I've been in here quite a few times to meet with folks, I've stopped in to the cafe, and I threw an event in the communal space, and I love the brewery downstairs. While parking can be a bit of an issue when an event is taking place, it's got a great central location and, at least for me, the historic and design-forward remodel aspects are close to my heart. Dig this space.

Cool old building, Brewery in the basement. What's not to love?…read more The Leftbank building is great, well actually it's three building put together but who's counting. It's kind of a rabbits warren of small companies connected by large communal spaces and even better natural light flooding in everywhere. The main Lobby/cafe room looking out on the street was interestingly complex but simply informal enough to be comfortable. Went here to check out Upright Brewing (http://www.yelp.com/biz/upright-brewing-portland#hrid:EonPV60YZaVQfVTk-p76Jw) but found myself wandering around the building checking out all the cool spaces. It was awesome! Leftbank Project is kind of the little brother to some of the other big Inner Eastside commercial renovations like Eastbank, Olympic Mills, and RiverEast.

Having lived in several tech hub cities, the co-working spaces I'm used to tend to have a high-tech focus with minimal decor. openHAUS wasn't like that at all but I really appreciated the difference. There's a lot of interesting art dotted throughout and it's got a lived-in feel with many in-progress projects out in the open. There are desks claimed and occupied by the stuff of regulars, but besides that you get your choice of a place to settle for the day. There's clean bathrooms nearby and a kitchen stocked with coffee and tea, and even ramen if you really didn't want to step out for food. I heard there was a dedicated parking lot though it wasn't obvious, but street parking was easy enough. I'm glad I tried this place and would come back. I was able to take calls and attend work meetings just fine out of here, and I was able to pop out for lunch and come back without worrying about my stuff getting touched. Finally, I was also a little surprised that someone came with their dog, a big boxer looking one, but it was generally well behaved and didn't come around again after getting to sniff me in the butt.

The dream, I think we can all agree. CNTRL's East Side facilities were immaculate and everyone's covid manners - staff and fellow visitors alike - were excellent. Actually everyone's anything manners were excellent period, except maybe mine, because I showed up to an understaffed building (hello, ice storm, that'll happen) and had a tantrum over the "closed" sign accidentally left on the door. Extra thanks to manager Tami for graciously tolerating and soothing me.

Probably five stars if you get the dedicated office spaces; for general members and day pass goers,…read moreI would give it 3.5 stars. Giving five stars overall, since most of the space is dedicated office spaces. Day passes: $35 for the day, $25 for half-day Very nice space, with the usual co-working amenities (free coffee, tea, water, wifi), numerous power outlets, and modern interior decor with some nice unique touches, like fresh flower bouquets on some tables, an abundance of natural light everywhere, and a coffee station on the first floor even though the kitchen is on the second floor. The general area is not as large as their Pearl District location. There's two kitchens, with refrigerators for use by everyone to store things. There's indoor bicycle storage(!) which is available to day pass users as well. If you get one of the dedicated office spaces on the second or third floor, the views are quite lovely. The only issues that makes this 3.5 stars for general members and day pass users involve the fishbowl effect of the space and the ergonomics of the chairs. Most of the open areas for general members/day pass users are very visible to the outside, with floor-to-ceiling windows. There's a somewhat more secluded space in the back with space for maybe eight people. This would make me nervous if I were doing work that was more private or if I was worried about leaving my stuff in the open to go to the bathroom, etc., the front door is unlocked and opens directly into the general member areas. Granted, the front desk person is there most of the time, but it's still a bit concerning for me. The second thing is for my back--the chairs in the general member/day pass areas are not ergonomic/adjustable office chairs, so it becomes difficult to work all day in them. In the very least, something adjustable height and even a lumbar pillow I can borrow from the front desk would be lovely. I was here briefly during their first week in operation, so there are some very minor glitches here and there, like not having those black little stirring things for tea/coffee, only half-and-half as the dairy option for your coffee/tea, and so on, but nothing that seems like an issue that will persist as they refine their space. Bathrooms: Clean, modern design, very functional, quite lovely, overall.

Lots of electrical outlets that are intelligently placed on top of the tables, and the wifi was reliable. Kitchen was stocked with the usual coworking amenities. That is, water, coffee, basic tea, and some basic snacks. The day I was there, it was Kind bars and bananas. There are more snacks and drinks in a vending machine in the kitchen and for sale at the reception desk, including gigantic bars of chocolate(!) which are produced by one of the occupants. There's a frig to store things. Some minor issues to note: Tea service is very basic. I only saw one "telephone booth", though it doesn't seem too bad if you have a conversation out in the open area. The space was rather chilly and I had to put on my jacket and scarf. I recommend bringing layers. Lastly, the chairs in the general areas were not adjustable and didn't provide good lumbar support. An example of beauty over function here. I wish the interior designer/manager opted for more ergonomic chairs, as occupants are often there all day long. Overall, this space was great! Bathrooms: Clean and functional, and lovely.

Mark heard my call for help through the social grapevine, and invited me to use the NedSpace space--and, wow! Fast internet. Miss Piggy and smilley-face mugs in the community kitchen. The regular folks renting who were there over the weekend, were so nice and accommodating, too. Just a very warm, cozy spot, downtown, welcoming at the last minute, clean, intentionally fun w/o the pretentious "disruptive innovation center!" vibe, but still setup to facilitate people getting work done and small events. Lots of conference rooms & workshopping areas. Definitely gonna be coming back here, more often! Oh, also? There's a garage in the building, so toting all my event stuff in and out, was a breeze. No other humans to coordinate with on the day-of, too--the building's security system is setup, such that a manager issues a temporary access code for the elevator, I usher everyone in and out (which for the size of my event was not a problem), and I packed-up after a post-event dinner break across the street.
