I have only been to Wetherspoons in the station once. We now have five Wetherspoons in Leeds, more than you would think one city reasonably needs, ranging from 'not horrible' to 'probably wont' touch anything in here'. Yes, the drinks are insanely cheap, but let's face it, there is always a reason not to go to Wetherspoons.
Until now? The boyfriend, in his wisdom, has recently started a job in the bowels of hell, at which it is fine to work 12 hours without a break for 4 nights on the trot. Having not seen him for long enough to forget that his absence is a blessing, I suggested that we meet at the station and go for breakfast when his train arrived. Naturally he missed the first train (the train he assured me he would be catching, the train that forced me to get out of bed at a ridiculous hour) so I had the opportunity to take a look around and pick a venue.
I was already aware that the station considered itself to have more amenities than is so in reality. You can cross the whole thing in two minutes, yet they have found it necessary to divide it into two sections and name them North Concourse and South Concourse. I have often found myself standing there on a lunchtime devoid of inspiration. So was the case at breakfast time. To get an actual breakfast, there were not that many places to go, and one of those places was McDonalds. Now I do think that McDonalds has it's place in society, but never at breakfast time so with heavy foreboding, I decided on Wetherspoons.
Wetherspoons at the station is a joy to pass, particularly at lunchtime when all the elderly alchoholics from the nearby offices flock to drink 5 pints in one hour. I know, I used to work with one of the regulars. Similarly, early evening finds those same individuals back again. Morning though, is a revelation. Yes, there are still stains on the floor and it is still a Wetherspoons, but there is no alcohol. In the place of the alcoholics are busy people on laptops. We both went for the vegetarian breakfast for £3.10, adding tea and toast for £1.80, and it really was very nice. I got three hash browns which was amazing, I loathe breakfasts that give you just one of each thing. Everything arrived quickly, was gone by the end and filled me up until lunchtime (well, half ten but my metabolism is greedy).
My advice? Just work on the assumption that Wetherspoons is only open from 6.30 till 11. You may find a whole different establishment! read more
