Me and my mate, Flint went in to this newly opened bar in Meanwood for a midweek pint as we had been anticipating it's opening for some time.
Matt is a Meanwood resident and until the opening of 'East of Arcadia' (another new ale bar across the road from Alfred) he had no notable places to go for a nearby pint. We were a bit disappointed with East of Arcadia's atmosphere (slightly reminiscent of an airport bar). As we were familiar with North Bar (Leeds centre) and Further North (Chapel Allerton), whom are owned by the same people as Alfred we were expecting something that would make 'East of Arcadia' look a bit pants.
We weren't far wrong.
Alfred has a very welcoming feel to it. It's quite small but that makes it cosy, the bar staff are very chatty and friendly too. The moment we walked up to the bar we were told we could sample any of the beers before we bought one. After we came to the end of our first pint (a Roosters ale from Knaresbrough - there was also a porter on and a ginger one from Manchester - one for the ladies) the barman came over to ask if we wanted another - which we did. Obv'. The clientele all seemed very relaxed and trendy but not in an annoying way. The decor is very nice as well. None of the furniture really matches which helps give the place an individual feel and just makes it more interesting than 'ikea bars' that have a very strict theme with all the same tables and chairs. Oh, it also had a very good selection of music on like - Arcade Fire, Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa and The Kinks (at just the right volume too).
A bit later, Matt and myself wanted to watch some football results come in and it was fine for us to plug his laptop in and pop it on to the table in front of us while we moved on to our third pint - hic.
All in all it's a great little place to have on your doorstep but I'd also recommend getting a bus down here if you don't live near by.
The only real drawbacks to the place are that the beer is quite expensive but that's what you have to expect really. They have such an interesting selection of beer that you just won't be able to try in usual pubs. They do serve Lindeboom if you just fancy a normal lager, though. It is also quite bright inside. This is because they have about 40 different lights hanging down from the ceiling - all with different light shades, which is quite cool but just a few too many lights for such a small place. They do appear to be aware of this, though as there have a small sign that reads 'Coming soon - Light dimmers'.
This is definitely somewhere I'll be visiting again. For the huge amount of exciting beer available and the welcoming feel the place gives, if nothing else.
