I had the fish chowder, which I thoroughly recommend. It was completely scrummy and came with doorsteps of brown bread! It was warming and ooh, nourishing! The landlord's Mum was helping out, bless, and she couldn't use the till. I think her son could have given her more information, poor woman. She did her best bravely. So I can't tell you what the usual staff are like. A very pleasant experience, but not a must do. I would have the chowder again, certainly and happily. Worth visiting, if you're in the area.

There are lots of black and white photos of boats and ships, all in Poole harbour, and some of them are very old. I had a half of Ringwood 49er - sorry ale lovers, I can't do it! I want my bacardi and coke! Found it just too filling and not the right taste for me - it's beer. More like German bier though. I'll certainly be back to try some of the food. Unless you know the statue is there, you can walk by without noticing! What a shame. Also, the statue is black and feels like some sort of resin. Since Poole is where it is, one would have thought Purbeck stone was more appropriate, and certainly more noticeable. I happen to know this statue cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. How sad that it is barely noticeable, and has no plaque or epithet. I think it's ended up being more of an insult than a tribute! The Scouts were started on Brownsea Island in 1908, and a jamboree was held there earlier this year. Scouts came from all over the world. For some reason, Prince William went to another one elsewhere in the Uk - I don't think Brownsea has a helipad. Very disappointing.

Rising Sun will not be eaten at every week by every customer, so the small menu gives it a feel of attention to detail. I had pan fried mackerel with deep fried fennel, new potatoes and a bed of sliced tomato. The fish was exquisite, something I never thought I'd say about mackerel. It went perfectly with the fennel. My meal was extremely enjoyable and I felt mildly disappointed to have to finish it. I would have liked to have seen a third colour on my plate, perhaps French beans. My companion had the cottage pie, which was delicious. (I know because I had to finish the last mouthful of my daughters.) It was finely chopped steak, cooked with a hint of wine I think. Superb. My daughter had frozen berries with vanilla sauce as her sweet. Fabulous. One has to wait for the hot sauce to melt the berries! It was truly fun and and delight. The sauce was perfect. I've been in here lots of times for coffee, hot chocolate or drinks. They do these well, if not fantastically. This year I had three meals here. A fairly pleasant lunch, an awful evening meal and a complimentary evening meal to make up for the first one. So the service is hit and miss, it seems. The last meal there was great but they were doing their best to compensate for the one before. They were almost falling over themselves to make us have a great experience. The staff are pleasant enough, just a bit dingy from time to time. We had been left waiting for ages during our first evening meal... On the whole the food is good although I feel there isn't much variety, more like variations on a theme. One really good point is their shots! Well worth £3!

For the regulars he had a pint in their jar before they got to the bar, was good at the banter and also seemed to know when to get scarce. As a guy who loves English bitter, was just passing through town, loves a natter, this place was a gem. The locals at this pub were a great bunch of guys and we all had a laugh. I felt at home within 5 minutes. So, of course I went back. I can't say enough about this public house. It ticked all my boxes.
