The building is more commonly or affectionately known as the PI. It is in the heart of the community and has been since 1906. I've been to so many various events, conferences, meetings and even a theatre production. I first started coming here to do teaching and train young unemployed volunteers about television operation. We had fun using the building as a film location for the many script ideas the young people came up with. On that note you may notice on the odd occassion a line of Arnold Clark vans lined up outside, then you know there's a film being shot inside. The PI has been used for many big budget films, proving it's such a great building. It has many rooms for office space and larger rooms/theatres split on three levels. The PI recently underwent some renovation work, especially for the return of the ship, which sits neatly at the top of the building outside. The MacLeod Hall is the largest hall, where I have arranged and attended many events and ceilidhs. It really is beautiful and a great space. I remember when setting up for an event elsewhere in the building the hall was being prepped for a wedding reception. I did say it was multi-functional. It has a lovely cafe called the Cafe Pearce, this tends to be seasonal so can close during summer and winter holidays. The staff are always pleasant and accomodating, as I have also arranged many events in there as well as it is also a suitable large room. I have also used the Lithgow Theatre for rehearsal space for singing and dancing. Back in December I went along to see a pantomine, The Govan Cat, which was brilliant. Although not a conventional theatre it worked really well with the balcony from the MacLeod Hall allowing for a dressing room for the cast. Many charities and businesses base themself from this building. There's also numerous organisations which use it from the Govan and Craigton Intergration Network to dance and karate classes for young children. It's a vibrant and active centre and it's wonderful to see how a tremendous amount of ventures and activity still occurs on a daily basis. The PI is always listed on the Doors Open Day, so if you want more of a look around I would definitely go along. Or why not just stop by for lunch for a wee cup of tea and bowl of soup.

Frustrated by a flurry of rejections to his mainstream designs, I like to assume he entered the city chambers as a very grumpy and sarcastic Glaswegian man. Council: "What have you got for us now then?" Leiper: "Whatever the hell you want, it's a carpet factory so why don't we just go ahead and design Doge's Palace in Venice, maybe that will keep you happy." Council: "Hmm, interesting, what colour?" Leiper: "Eh? What d'you mean what colour? Orange, yellow, blue, with multi-coloured turrets and arches, I don't care what effing colour!" And alas, Templeton Carpet Factory was formed. Overlooking Glasgow Green, slightly further along from the People's Palace, this truly bizarre design is one of my favourite buildings in the city. Now operating as a business centre with a small pub situated next door, it has become a tourist attraction in its own right, despite the fact many Glaswegians are criminally unaware of its existence. Dating back to 1899, the building was designed as a carpet mill by William Leiper. The centre is often called "The Doge's Palace" because it resembles the building of that name in Venice.

The price and location make it an ideal place for small start-up companies also the helpfulness of the owners is very good. They are both friendly and always make you feel welcome. They are flexible and try to help you out any way they can. The Business centre itself has a large Atrium area where you can sit and relax with colleagues over a tea or coffee.

Some different seating arrangements available, so you can likely find the style you're looking for, though I didn't see any counters or standing desks, if that's your thing. Slightly odd, but for the drop-in fees, they only took cash. The scale is by the hour, capping at £25 for the entire day if I remember correctly. The staff is friendly and helpful. The place overall has a good vibe. Bathrooms: Generally clean and functional.

They've several rooms of different sizes, and we find them really good for team away days - with coffee and tea, pastries, sandwiches etc available for extra cost. The rates are all reasonable, and the staff respond very quickly to enquiries. If I needed to hot desk, I'd come here too. The facilities look great, and there are membership options for anyone who's likely to become a regular, not to mention mentoring opportunities and events around social entrepreneurialism (possibly a word I just made up) and innovation. It's all eco-friendly, and the whole place is run with a really inclusive ethos. The Melting Pot is probably one of Edinburgh's underdogs, but it's a really great and important space that deserves a pat on the back.
