I'll give you that, after all, it is conveniently located just a block off US 45, but for many area residents, this is their go-to grocery outlet. It's been a general store mainstay in "uptown" Elcho for well over 100 years. There are photos over the entrance doors that show Elcho in its halcyon days, this store next to the bank and the hotel known as The Muskie Inn. There's even a photo of the beautiful old depot, across the street, that served passengers on the Chicago & Northwestern Railway's Ashland Division. North Trail Store retains it's old time flavor with the same squeaky, highly polished hardwood floors my great-grandmother, grandmother and mother trod upon and the store still carries many of the same products they did when Grandma and I came here to do her weekly grocery shopping. In the early days of the automobile, probably 100 years ago, the store even had gas pumps out on the curb. But in today's modern world, they still have fresh meats and everything you need as you head out to the cottage or campground from here. Charcoal, chips, staples, soda and don't forget the beer! It's all here! The C&NW tracks, the beautiful old depot and the Muskie Inn are long gone, but the North Trail Store carries on. There's even a gift shop with just the right souvenir of your trip to the north woods. Stop in the next time you're passing through Elcho on your way to Upnorth. In fact, if you're northbound, it's even on the correct side of 45 to slide back into traffic. Check it out!

When you check out you can buy fresh curds or pick up some wild rice. There is even a quarter push game at the entrance. Did I mention that they also repair boats? It's just crazy the breadth of items and services they sell in such a cute little space. Did I mention that they even sell weed pipes lol? It's a one stop shop that is a great throwback.

What a waste, right? That's what made the 17th hole different. The sign read "The Liquor Store, downtown Tomahawk - over 200 different beers and wines". Needless to say, we made a beeline straight into downtown Tomahawk. We couldn't get there fast enough. Let me be clear, there is NO need to purchase beer or wine back home if you're vacationing within 50 miles of this place. We assumed great beer wouldn't be found and made several purchases near Madison on the drive up. The variety they have will more than suit your beer, wine and spirit loving needs. Everything from domestic mass produced beers to craft items can be found. It was an alcoholic's dream. 5 stars all around and I'll definitely head back on subsequent trips to and through the area.

Gal running the store was super friendly and helpful. It would have been nice to have more beer at room temp for traveling, but this is a hometown place where I'm sure most customers want the beer cold.

ICO should be proud that they have such a sweetheart of an employee as they have in Lene. She kept checking on us, made us feel like we were like old friends and gave us kind words of encouragement that everthing would work out okay. A nice, small, one-stop shop for your Three Lakes grocery, liquor, and video rental needs. The staff is always very friendly, tolerant of unending stream of out-of-towners, and ready to help you find what you need. The only downfall is the high prices, but that's true of every small, northwoods grocery I've ever been to. There's simply not enough volume to offer low prices, but since I'm on vacation I don't worry too much about it. To give you an idea of price point, it's about $3 for a gallon of water, nearly $5 for a bag of M&Ms, and a few bucks for a loaf of bread. Ouch.

Good selection of produce (bigger section of the store than i remembered last). I was surprised to see Kefir offered in the dairy section, and of course, like all things in the Northwoods-- they had a large beer selection-- but mainly of national brands (not so many that were local or small breweries). Great place to pick up the essentials and not-so-essentials. It also looks like if you ask someone there who orders the items there-- you might be able to work through them to get something specific... especially since something like Kefir was there!
