We stumbled upon Westside deli while in the area. This is a seat yourself establishment. Our server came over pretty quickly to take our drink orders. The service was friendly and pleasant. The menu offers lots of different sandwiches, etc. For starters. I had onion rings. They were a nice portion. Crispy outside with a warm tender onion inside. I really enjoyed these! I also had the Reuben( w/t Russian dressing) it comes with chips. The sandwich was nicely made but did lack in a flavor a bit. Overall, I enjoyed my first time visit here. Typical deli atmosphere. The sandwiches here are of a good size and service is great! Just that occasionally there's a slightly unpleasant oily aftertaste in some of the hot sandwiches you can order but nothing too crazy. The bread may have varying qualities at times. Not a deli I go to regularly but if you want a quick bite to eat not a bad place to consider. I got the "super" (large size) cheese sub with extra veggies. Served with a generous sized CRM fresh and crisp pickle spear. I ordered this to go I was slightly disappointed in the to go chips, when dining in the chips are the extra crunchy ones with ridges to go orders are the wise brand chips. I added jalapeño to my sub (paid extra) but didn't receive any on my sub, not a problem while dining in but left me wanting more out of my veggie sub. The good: fresh fresh fresh ingredients including a perfectly soft sub roll. The veggie sub was so loaded with cheese and veggies that it was hard to even notice there was no meat and it left me as satisfied as a turkey club. I've ordered for pickup a few times now and have been satisfied with the service and quality! They have waitstaff and a great seating area, which I wouldn't have expected from a deli. The workers have been friendly and accommodating to substitutions in my orders. I think the highlight may actually be their sweet potato fries believe it or not. They're seasoned well and the perfect amount of crispy, better than a lot of other restaurants in town. As far as their sandwiches go, it's pretty standard and nothing too special. They pack them with enough cheese and veggies, though I could make a very similar sandwich myself for a lot cheaper. The onion rings were a bit stale-tasting (something wrong with their breading). Overall, it's significantly better than going to subway or Jersey Mike's. And I absolutely will come back for the fries. read more

My friend pointed out to me that it was the smell of Chinese food (which confused me further) which I didn't like. I love the sandwiches at Westside Deli; especially the pastrami and cornbeef sandwiches w/sauerkraut. Sandwiches are usually accompanied with chips and a pickle spear. The bread is always fresh as well as the meats. I tried the pasta salad for the 1st time and it was delicious. They also have a nice variety of sliced pies and cakes for your sweet tooth. I've been here about 15 times in the last 5 years and the food always satisfies. The inside has a mom and pop restaurant type feel, nothing fancy. The food is reasonably priced, even though a few menu prices have been increased in recent months. You go here for the sandwiches and burgers. I always get the hot Italian sub, with chips. Delicious sandwich. Po-boy sandwich was great. The shrimp was meaty, juicy, and perfectly fried. Bread was perfectly toasted as well. There was a yummy side sauce, and they didn't close the sandwich to keep everything crispy. The Reuben was crisp on the outside and tender from the inside. Great acidity from the sauerkraut. Used to come here regularly. The food is not awesome but is good & has a varied selection of different sandwiches as well as salads & a few hot dishes. The owners are hard working people running the kitchen. Unfortunately several of the wait staff who I believe are related to the owners often do not get orders correctly but we are pretty forgiving people & usually overlook it after they correct it. The last time we were there, my friend ordered a beer he had not had before. After receiving it and taking a sip of it, he realized that it was not the beer he ordered. Deli / pub-ish The Westside Deli is not a deli in the sense that a New Yorker would relate to - it is similar in some respects but it is different in many ways. For example, a true deli is famous for breakfast sandwiches. This place does not open before 11 so that whole slice of deli specialty goes out the window. The Westside is open for lunch and dinner and that is when it start to resemble more of what you would expect of a deli. They have a fairly extensive menu of sandwiches and appetizers, many with names right out of the old neighborhoods in NYC - nice touch. Where this place veers off from deli and into pub territory is that they have a bunch of beer taps and alcohol available and typically the beers are fairly cheap. The deserts are pretty much store bought and standard. This is a very casual place - the sandwiches / fries etc. all come out in plastic baskets and the furnishings are pretty dated - the place could certainly use a face lift. Prices are typical for this area: i.e.: cheap. Portions are large and frankly, they make some very tasty food here. Servers run the gamut from full on awesome to pokey, but they are all very friendly which certainly helps. There is a small patio behind the place to sit outside if that is your thing. They do have some live music on Tuesdays, but it ends on the earlier side of the evening. I want to say that they also have a happy hour- but please check before you go on that. Ate there with a friend yesterday evening and had Sarah as our waitress. Sarah didn't seem at all attentive to the needs of myself and my friend. She seemed like she didn't want to be serving us if not anyone. She is very nasty to the other young waitresses and kitchen staff and treats them like they are incompetent! She asked if our bill was going to be together or separate and when my friend answered she immediately turned and walked away while my friend was trying to tell her he wanted dessert. She comes back with our checks and my friend tells her he would like a piece of cake and she got pissy and mad. She goes to put our cake orders onto our bills and slams our checks on the counter in anger. To sum things up Sarah is the worst waitress I have ever had and her customer service is piss poor. Upon moving to the Lynchburg area several months ago, my wife and I were looking for a non-chain restaurant that we could sit down for a casual meal, sandwich, or just a drink and some appetizers. I'm happy to say that we found it in the Westside Deli! Nestled away in a small, nondescript shopping center, the atmosphere is very casual, yet homey. The menu? Plenty of varieties of sandwhiches that you've probably seen in many deli cafe type places, but also including burgers, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks (including fine spirits and a generous selection of beers on tap!), and even some desserts on display. My wife and I started with a "happy hour" sized portion of Fried Pickles ($3), which came out hot, with a crispy coating that didn't overpower or take away from the pickle itself. My wife ordered the Shrimp Salad sandwhich, while I ordered the 'Westside Club'. Both sandwiches were generous with their toppings, and with the additional .99 upcharge for crinkle-cut fries (delicious!), we were completely stuffed. The Shrimp Salad had the right balance of mayo and seasoning, which had a distinct taste of black pepper with some cayenne pepper in there, as well. Very savory. My club sandwich had fresh turkey, crispy bacon, and was perfectly proportioned. My mother, who was born in NYC and is a deli snob, would love these. On the way out, we got 2 Cheesecake Bites for .50 each. Both were extremely creamy and a delicious cap to the meal. Service this evening was a bit on the slower side, but the kitchen appeared shorthanded, so the friendly service staff made up for it with constant checks to refill drinks, check on order status, etc. That's why there is no penalty for that here. If you're expecting 5 star cuisine, you're not in the right place. However, if you're looking for a great place to sit down, enjoy a sandwich, burger, or drink, and stay for a while, a trip to the Westside will suit you just fine. read more

All praise the 9th wonder of the world, the gracious and delicious Westside Deli. One time, my friend went here and was really sad (but not because of Westside). They have amazing super-sized beers for cheap, so he got one and then got super-drunk, because he's a super-small man. While being drunk, he tried to steal a big beer mug, drop his food on the floor, and then tried fight a table full of geriatrics. Anyway. Had a case at the Social Security Administration hearing office and needed a quick lunch before I headed home. Yelp tells me there's a 4.5 star deli right across the street so of course I don't hesitate. Only one thing wrong: this place should have 5 stars! My sandwich, called Stan's sub (a delicious take on an Italian featuring a thick slice of bologna), showed up within 5 minutes of me ordering it. Wow this deli is really, really good. Short version - make a stop with any excuse possible. I came here for lunch the other day with a deli craving and it was surely satisfied. During the lunch hour they were moderately busy but services wasn't shaken by it at all. There were several attentive waitresses taking orders and serving customers. They have quite the surprising selection of beers on tap for a deli but being lunch I didn't get the chance to try any. Dually noted though. The menu - it is extensive with a wide range of deli sandwiches to choose from (both hot and cold) so no one will leave disappointed. I went with the Knockwurst which was very good and well prepared with just the right about of spice. A solid choice if you do desire. One regret about this place - not getting dessert. I saw several different cakes to choose from but when I ordered fries on the side I didn't have the room. I guess I'll just have to return for a repeat sandwich and cake - until next time. 5/5 - absolutely will return. Definitely recommend. read more

This is a fantastic little deli. I'm quite shocked for any bad reviews. I have been going to this place for over ten years. I have never had a bad experience once. The staff is always eccentric along with the owners who make a lot from scratch. I enjoy the atmosphere of different. You can go in there dressed to the hilt or in active wear. You're going to feel like you belong. The food is excellent and fresh. The Italian sub is the best I've had anywhere. You can customize the size of subs. Which is great since I can't eat so much in one sitting and don't care for doggy bags. The fried pickles can be enjoyed by someone who doesn't even like pickles. They have these munchers I don't even care what's in them. They are that good. Nothing is pretentious or over done or garnished for no reason. It's straight up food and a large diverse menu. The oyster poboy is epic. The children's menu is ridiculous priced. You basically get full sized portions for 6 bucks. They burgers are fresh and my very picky daughter kills it even with romain lettuce on it. I have never cared for crinkle cut fries but I eat theirs. I'm a sober person and they serve a large variety of alcohol but there's no bar and the atmosphere is not offensive or aggressive. You barely even notice alcohol is being served. Even the customers are fabulous that go there. They have many regular customers that eat there almost every day. You WILL NOT be disappointed for this stop. And I didn't even mention the made from scratch desserts that hit you right in the face upon arrival in a beautiful case. Don't pass up the experience. read more

Probably better for lunch than dinner. I'm not really a big fan of eating sandwiches for dinner. It's kinda like eating spaghetti for breakfast. I've done it, but I don't do it often. So I tried to find something that wasn't a sandwich and settled on the chicken BBQ plate with slaw and a basket of onion rings. Onion rings were very good and didn't taste frozen. The chicken BBQ looked like vomit on a plate and was cold. The slaw was room temperature and just slightly warmer than the BBQ. Everybody else at the table agreed to a collective "meh."
