The Westside Bikeway is a 'rail trail' following an historic train line almost from the city to almost Glenelg. Power lines also follow this corridor.
There are two main problems with the Westside bikeway. One, it starts and finishes slightly in the middle of nowhere. Two, it's not scenic.
But the Westside Bikeway is part of a beautiful 30km bike circuit called the 'River and Coast Ride' composed almost entirely of dedicated bike path. Notice that it's the part of the trail not mentioned in the title... i.e. the 'loop closer.'
Interested? Grab a map from BikeSA or at the tourist info booth in Rundle Mall. But here are the rough directions: Follow the Torrens Linear Park trail from the city to the ocean. Head south along the Coast Park Bikeway until you reach the mouth of the Glenelg River. From here ride a short distance along the roads to the start of the Westside Bikeway at Morphett Road and Anzac highway. Follow this bikeway to its completion at South and James Congdon Roads. Here you're only a short road ride away from the city and your starting point.
If the Torrens Linear Park trail were a 7 (out of 10) in scenic terms, this would be a 3. BUT... it's still well superior to riding on the roads.
On a sunny day make sure to sunscreen those upper thighs; shade is scarce along this track. read more
