It is a bizarre place for a university to be based because of the residential air that it generates. The only give away that this is actually the University of Bristol's hub is the number of students streaming by going about their lives, oh, and the giant signs outside each building. I like it though, the quiet peaceful road has character because it is the way it is and does not try to be anything else.

I've had the pleasure of working with students from here as well as visiting many of the shows and exhibitions they put on. Its currently undoing a big of a revamp to make the college look as good as the performances and provide new facilitates. This a real institution that all of Wales should be proud of.

It's a fabulous little intimate venue and if you ever get a chance to see a decent production here then its worth going. I am not sure if business is as usual at the moment because it is under going a £22.5 million building re-design. The new buildings are due to open in the Spring of 2011 but the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama is Wales' leading music and drama conservatoire and this new addition to the College's professional training and performance facilities comprises The Richard Burton Theatre. It was recently named at a gala evening at Buckingham Palace, along with the 450-seat Concert Hall, four Acting & Movement Studios and an Exhibition Gallery. So it held in high regard.

The Bristol Uni buildings are located all around the centre of the city, and most are very old and pretty. The university is pretty large, with around 13000 students, and they, along with their UWE counterparts, mean that the city is buzzing with life. The university does pretty well for itself; it's high in the league table, and draws a very Clifton-esque student population every year.

Up there in the heady heights of the league tables with Oxford and Cambridge, Bristol Uni is an old-skool red brick institution with some of the most prestigious medical courses, English and history degrees in the world. It looks all towering and cool at the top of park street and has educated comedy genii such as David Walliams, Matt Lucas, Chris Morris, Simon Pegg and errr Lembit Olpik, plus the famed feminist author Angela Carter (I'm bowing down to her as I write this). Stunning architecture and a past that stems back to 1876 - this is the educational and philosophical pulse of Bristol in all its glory.

This is a good University for those who are clever enough and for those who work hard enough to meet the Universities requirements. I suppose it's like this with most Universities, if not all, but this University in my view is the Welsh and Cardiff equivalent University standard to Oxford University. However, Cardiff University has many courses for you to choose from. I have heard that the teaching seems to be brilliant in the areas in helping you develop your career and that the support they give you is really good as well. If I did have the level of intelligence and the qualifications to match this University's certain requirements I most properly would have chosen to study the Journalism degree there. They also have poetry evenings and other activities going on here and there during the evenings on certain sites within the University. I met and heard the poet Gwyneth Lewis read her poetry once. I recommend it to all of those interested in studying there and to any friends of those who are studying there as a great place to visit and or to study.

I thoroughly enjoyed being a student and being a student in cardiff made it all the more special. Aside from the usual student 'activities' the actual studying part was also great. Cardiff is a brilliant university. My course was well organised, lectures were well thought out and interesting, staff were always on hand to help. The facilities at Cardiff are also top rate. There are so many computer rooms, labs, libraries. Some are open 24 hours too. The social facilities are also exceptional with a larger than average student union containing bars, club, and shops. Brilliant! Since leaving university I have gone on to do 2 more courses. My second was at a different university and compared to Cardiff it was not even close. I am currently doing a post grad qualification and I've picked Cardiff again. As a part time mature student it is just as outstanding. Support from staff is second to none. I highly recommend studying here.

There is more sport and fitness on offer than you can shake a stick at, so if your kids say they're bored then you can ship them off to the City Academy for a couple of hours to wear them out. To give you a brief idea: the centre offers Five-a-Side footie (indoor and outdoor), 11-a-side,Tennis, Basketball, Netball, Volleyball, Rugby, American Football, Cricket and Badminton. They run energetic courses in Boxing, Martial Arts and Fencing (en garde!). The space is huge - a massive indoor sports hall (35-a-side court), an outdoor 3G artificial grass 11-a-side pitch with goals; can be split into 4 outdoor 5-a-side courts; and 2 full size tennis courts and 1 kids tennis court, plus a great little cafe to recover in afterwards with a cuppa!

Have a look through the listings to see if anything takes your fancy. There's some quite challenging stuff on, with some of the installations making absolutely no sense at all if you ask me. The gallery is free and definitely worth dropping in to if you're in the city centre looking for something to do. It changes frequently so I can't vouch for the quality of the art though there is a good video exhibition on right now. Similarly, their film showings are varied - they don't just show the latest releases - and you have to keep an eye out for something that interests you. The entire gallery has three floors, and each is usually occupied with an exhibition. I've found that most times, there is one main exhibition that runs through the whole gallery, with maybe only one or two separate ones in smaller rooms. This place provides quite a hit and miss experience, of course depending on what you personally enjoy in art. I would say half the times that I've been here, I've enjoyed what the Arnolfini has to offer, and often leave quite inspired. However the other half of the time, I walk in and the whole space is taken up by children's activities, to try and engage them more in the exhibition that's on. This is great for the kids but creates quite a confusing atmosphere for the adults that walk in and expect to see more art, and instead see about 50 children in what looks like a giant activities room. The best thing to do before coming here is to check on their website for more information of the exhibitions, and you can come for the ones that tick your fancy, and avoid others that don't.
