When I tell people I've recently moved to Hilltop, raised eyebrows with unenthusiastic 'Ohh...'s usually follow, but what they don't know.. is ultimately my secret. A lot of people will not know where 'Westgate' is located. Certainly they know where 'The Hilltop' is, and ultimately, 'Westgate' is a branch of Hilltop, but it's not what people ultimately assume.
Westgate is like this 'Oasis' of the westside Ghetto. The people here are friendly and take on a 'Leave it to Beaver' mentality, much like Clintonville's cherished community. The houses are well kept, lawns maintained, flowers perfectly pruned, and faces usually smiling. They even have a neighborhood association... Who knew?
I participated in a small arts festival here last summer at the park. I was nervous as all get out.. Thinking I was going to be shanked, and that my car would be riddled with bullet holes before it was said and done, but in the end, I fell in love with this small community.
The community revolves around it's small park filled with mature old trees, and a quaint little fishing pond complete with fountain and wildlife for your viewing pleasure. The park has a nice 1 mile stretch paved walking trail that navigates in and around the trees.
There's really just about everything here for your outdoor recreation lover. They have tennis courts, basketballs courts, racetball/handball courts and of course baseball and soccer fields. If you stop by for people watching, this place fills up quickly on the weekends with community groups and clubs. The park is also attached to the Rec center, which gives me the feel of how Whetstone is setup.
They've completely remodeled their shelter house, which now includes modern conveniences like AC and big beautiful windows looking out onto the quaint homes surrounding the park. If you have children, then for God sakes, bring them here to wear them down! There's plenty of play areas for them, and most are fairly new.
While this park may not have the charm of Schiller, or Goodale, it's still a wonderful place to come and relax for a while. And hey... they're working on it. Last I heard a butterfly and rain garden have been installed. They've recently organized a group of people to help preserve the park, so I can see great and wonderful things in the future happening here. It's only a matter of time.
Welcome to Westgate!! Ya'll stop over sometime! read more
