Cross these to get to a few cool businesses. You should avoid the actual park and go check out these. It doesn't have a whole lot happening inside. It's because there's not a whole lot of room. This is just a small grassy area surrounded by streets. Businesses around the park are much more interesting. You can go to a hippie owned bookstore and performance space, craft beer at Flagship Brewery, and pizza at Flour and Oak. Inside the park is one interesting statue to look at. Historically, the area was known as The Watering Place - the last source of fresh water where colonial ships could refill their water supplies before hitting the Atlantic Ocean. The Spanish-tiled park building once held rest rooms and there is a statue called "The Hiker" that commemorates the dead of the Spanish-American War. Today, the park is bordered by taxis, bus stops, a wig shop, a communal book store/performance center, an art gallery, fast food, bodegas and social services. Within another block's radius, there is a brewery, a photo studio, a wide variety of ethnic restaurants, including Mexican and Sri Lankan cuisine, a couples-friendly adult shop, and several good drinking establishments - today's watering places. On the second Saturday of every month, the artists, galleries, photo studios in the area host an art walk. At the end of April, the annual St. George Day Festival fills the park with music, arts, earth-friendly culture and giant dragon puppets. If all else falls through, bring your own in a brown paper bag and join the regulars in the park for a few choruses of your favorite song.
