My mom just died in hospital hospice at Westerly Hospital. It was a horrible, horrible experience. I will lead with the worst part. I spent the last 72 hours straight with my mom, on a chair next to her bed (I was with her before that as well, but was especially careful to stay with her towards the end). On the morning of her passing I saw that she had stopped breathing. I knew not to say anything since I have seen that hospitals want to hustle people out as fast as possible at that point. They do not care that there are studies showing that heart stoppage and brain stoppage are not the same at all. It can take days for brain cells to die. People who went into cardiac arrest and who were revived have had memories of the experience that lasted up to two hours after their heart stoppage. So, after forty minutes, a nurse came in and checked her. She looked at me, and I nodded. About fifteen minutes later the doctor came in; a woman in her 60s. She checked my mother's heart rate at turned to me and said "Your mother is dead." I said to her, "Can we step outside the room and talk about this." She replied that there was no need to because my mother was dead. She said this LOUDLY. I told her that it was my preference, and also that there was a lot of data that people's brains still worked for a period after their heart stopped. She said NO, YOUR MOTHER IS DEAD. THERE ARE ONLY TWO PEOPLE IN THE ROOM NOW, YOU AND ME, BECAUSE YOUR MOTHER IS DEAD." I handed her my smart phone and showed her the 2023 NYU Langone study on the persistence of brain function (and memory of brain function, after the person was revived) after heart death. She looked at it and said "I don't care about that, that is not how I practice medicine, that is not our system, YOUR MOTHER IS DEAD." She was very angry, and very loud. She then left the room and I followed her out and continued the discussion with her in front of the staff at the nursing station. I pointed out that her view of medical reality was not even relevant; I was the daughter and I had made a request concerning talking in front of my mother and she did not honor it. She then left and another doctor showed up. He was familiar with the Langone study. He still didn't think it meant that my mother needed more time in the room. I pointed out that the whole point of knowing about such studies is that they can be taken into account even before standard practice has changed. In any case, I managed to keep my mom's body in the room in the company of loving friends and relatives for the next four hours, and she did not have to hear some terrible person repeating loudly that she was dead while her brain was still functioning. I have to wonder why that doctor was so committed to discussing my mom's death in front of her, even after I had repeatedly asked her not to. Why it mattered so much to her that heart death equalled brain death, and why it angered her so much to have this questioned. The day before my mother died, I stepped out of the room and told the nurse who was administering my mother's meds that I was hoping to have the morphine given as needed rather than on a schedule, because it was drugging her out and keeping her from the possibility of recognizing friends and relatives. The nurse replied that that was the "doctor's order." I told her that that meant that I would like to talk with the doctor about it. She was affronted and said to me "I'm trying to work with you," and headed off. A major point of hospice is that family members have input into this sort of thing. Also, it is not the role of nurses to "gate keep" medical decisions. When I returned to my mom's room the head of nursing was there, and a social worker. The head of nursing told me that I was "interfering with" my mother's medical care. I was astounded and told him that I would be happy to discuss the matter with him if the conversation were recorded and on video. He went off and made phone calls (I could see him doing so in the distance) and came back and apologized. So, the authoritarian nurse had sicced the head of nursing and the social worker on me to bully me. The head of nursing and I then discussed the substance of the matter and came to an agreement about the timing of the morphine. For the first two days in "hospital hospice" my mother was still very much enjoying food. She ate pudding cups and yogurt cups (the latter I had to buy her from the cafeteria) and little bits of chocolate. But if I had not been there she would not have gotten them. I asked a nurse and she told me that they would feed my mother if my mother asked them to. But they would not offer. They would just let her lie there, hungry, I feel terribly, terribly sorry for anyone who is in there who does not have a loved one to give them that kind of care. Although we absolutely had some very good nurses and doctors in the ER, the amount of unprofessional behavior happening at the nurse's station was disgusting. I overheard staff calling patients "dramatic," and one woman rolled her eyes at me and gossiped to colleagues when we asked a question. I understand the high pressure of working in the caring professions, but this type of behavior is unacceptable. The only reason I did not say something to the unprofessional staff in the moment was because I did not want my feedback to result in worse care for my mother. It's a massive problem when health care workers become so normalized to pain and suffering that they no longer act as if they care. Perhaps it's time for some of the employees to find a different job. As an educator, I get the challenges, including burnout and care fatigue, associated with this type of work. I'm so disappointed and it took every ounce of energy I have to hold my tongue. read more

I was operated on yesterday to dissolve a very large kidney stone. The nurses and doctors were exceptional! There was no waiting, I went into the surgical suite exactly on time. I was kept warm both before and after surgery. I was kept fully informed of what was going to happen by the surgeon, Dr George Turini, the anesthetist, and the nurses. What a terrible experience . I hurt my knee and could not walk. I had to call and ambulance to get me out of my home s I could not move my leg . It took four people to accomplish this. I get there and the first shift nurse was very nice . The physician that was there at first was ok but not so helpful as they took xray told me I would probably need surgery and that they were going to get me on crutches and release me. I the. Explained that I would not be able to do crutches as I cannot move my leg . They then decided to keep me overnight. My husband came a while later to bring me something to eat . At that point , shift changed and that crew was pretty terrible with the exception of the one nurse who was responsible for me . My husband had questions and they were dismissive . He then asked for a patient advocate and that when it took a turn for the worse . The next shift dr was non caring and when explaining to him that I could not make it up the stairs to my apartment an could not use th bathroom he said it was not his problem . The nurses were saying that my husband was being rude and told him to leave . So basically asking questions is a no no at this hospital . They eventually called the police . There were 2 one of which was just as nasty as th medical staff . In the end , I told my husband to just go because we were not getting anywhere with the staff and they really did not care about what I was Going through . After he left , the nurse that was assigned to me got me squared away to where I can just go to sleep in peace . She was the only one out of that nasty night crew that was actually nice . I go up the next morning and saw the nurse I had yesterday when I had first gotten there which was a relief . I was able to move my leg around . The PT arrived a couple hours later and he showed me how to do the crutches . I was determined to learn so I could get out of this place . I have never felt so uncomfortable and unwanted at a hospital. These people do not give a shit about patients . That is very clear to me . Under no circumstance will I ever come here again. Weaterly hospital care is among the worst I have ever seen and hey give there patients no respect and no dignity and make them feel they speak up for them selves and if they do they will be in trouble and when I the husband tries to advocate for her the nasty nurses yell get defensive call security and the police and have you trespassed from the premises I would rather die then get treatment from them do not let an ambulance take you there under any circumstances or you will regret it she was unable to walk or use the bathroom and planned on discharging her unsafely with no regard for her well being and when she asked for a patient advocate they said one was not available and all of the sudden they said they needed the room and would have to go in the hall way as some sort of punishment for advocating and speaking up for her rights and when I spoke up they lied and said I was being disorderly and called the police and had me thrown out of the hospital thaw fact I pay a lot of money for health insurance to get treatment like this is in American and third Count mindset the nurses and staff are the rudest and most entitled people I have ever come across and I would rather lose a limb then get treatment from them I promise my hard earned health insurance money will never be spent there take the time and effort and go to south county hospital a much more professional and humane environment I have never felt like such a second class citizen so bad in my life with no rights then I have tonite In that hospital and all over thw website you will See phone numbers for advocacy and help and they all go to voicemails and dead ends and run around I can tell you from experience non of it is real they will offer you advocacy or support when requested it is all a big joke to their staff no one is available on any of those patient support lines so if you go their go with low expectations and plan on getting treating with no respect as they do. Or know what that is stay far away from this hospital if you respect yourself and your health and care about your loved one because they certainly do not I will never be a patient there and neither will anyone I care about just google online their reviews they are some of the most horrid stories of neglect and abuse and no caring environment you will ever read zero stars and I reiterated stay far away from this hospital unless you want ypir dignity taking from you from a bunch of bitter angry nurses and doctors and supervisors that will cover for them take this review to heart because what I went through was no joke and if you have to go their good luck and be prepared to be treated poorly with no respect or care and they do not care about family as they will respond to every bad review they care about themselves and money and making themselves feel big read more

I was mistreated by the Westerly hospital last week. The emergency room nurses treated me like I was an animal, not someone who ha a mental illness and physical illnesses. They actually restrained me on a bed , because I didn't cooperate with their very very poor care. Apparently there was a room with no one in it right next to me. But I stayed in the hallway outside of the room. Then I saw the bill for the care??? I will never associate with that hospital again. i found out later, that they have a small psychiatric ward for older patients. I'm 62! Why wasn't I sent there??? The nurses yelled and yelled at me and then the Westerly Police Officer comes over to me and starts screaming at me. When my 8-year-old daughter suddenly developed a painfully swollen knee with a visible infection, I knew we needed to act fast. I calmly gathered my things and we headed just down the street to Westerly Hospital -- and what happened next was nothing short of amazing. From the moment we walked in, the staff treated us with warmth, professionalism, and genuine compassion. Check-in was smooth, triage was immediate, and before we even had a moment to feel anxious, we were already in a room being cared for. My daughter has never had her blood drawn before, let alone had an IV placed, and she is terrified of blood. But thanks to the calm, kind, and expert approach of the staff, she got through it like a champ -- not a single tear or whimper! Because they acted quickly, they were able to administer antibiotics right away, potentially preventing a very scary situation from becoming worse. I want to give a HUGE and heartfelt thank you to PA Kasia T., nurses Kristen T. and Brenda R., and I feel like I'm missing another nurse. and the amazing Nurse Asst, Audra C. You turned a frightening night into a memorable one -- not only because of the outstanding care, but because you allowed my daughter to still be a kid, to laugh, to be silly, and to feel safe in a vulnerable moment. I have been going to WMH for 3 years now for all of my screenings. From reception to nurses I've never had an issue with their care. The hospital is clean the staff efficent the wait time minimul and the care itself is exceptional. Everytime I go in I'm treated with respect, as if I'm the only patient for the day. My only wish is that they would build a pulmonary team so I wouldn't have to travel for this. WMH please grow your campass to include more fields of services. Do not trust Westerly Hospital (YNHH) when it comes to accurate billing practices. I have been getting a $400 bill for bloodwork that is completely covered by my insurance company, EOB says ZERO responsibility. I have had the Pathway Concierge contact them as well and it is still not taken care of. I also met my out of pocket max for the year. I just got another email saying I need to pay this or they will send it to collections. From what my insurance company says is that they are trying to balance bill me. Which is illegal. Just keep a good eye out on your medical bills from Westerly Hospital. read more

After several days of immediate intervention, excellent care, diligent diagnostics and round the clock observation I was convinced I had received the best care possible. The staff from the doctors, nurses, PCA's, housekeepers and those involved in the preparation and delivery of three wonderful meals each day worked flawlessly with respect and acknowledgment of the next individual's involvement. Both my daughter and I were sick. Went to their ER and were quickly through triage but then ushered into a broken down 'overflow' room that should not have been in use. Only 1 test was done on both of us, and they rushed us out without getting the results and without seeing an actual DR. They never called with results so I had to play phone tag only to find out that we STILL didn't know what was wrong with us and all they did was tell us to take Tylenol. If you value your health, this isn't the place to go. It's run down, the staff doesn't seem to want to be there and I doubt there's actually physicians available. I saw a Physcians assistant running from room to room, but when I asked to see a DR was refused. read more

I hesitantly went into the ER with extreme menstrual bleeding and pain. I was there for 3-1/2 hours during which time I was made to feel like I was putting out the staff for being there. No compassion was shown and instead I was reminded numerous times that this is the ER and not the gynecologist even while standing in a pool of my own blood, while being discharged. I was not offered help to clean up, I was offered ibuprofen, which was never brought to me, and was given zero compassion or remorse while in tears during an ultrasound due to the pain I was having. The nurse during this time let me know she also has heavy periods and to just talk to my Gyno. I've never felt more de-humanized and embarrassed in my life than in this moment. I saw the Dr for no more than 5 minutes and was again tied to "see my gyno". I will never be back to this hospital, nor would I ever suggest another person go. read more

The emergency room attendants are courteous and professional, and very kind for the most part, although I did say Merry Christmas to one nurse and she did not say a word but shot me a dirty look! Sad really. Who knows what's going on with her! Whatever. Also I took a COVID-19 test and was told to log onto my chart which requires a degree from MIT or Yale. After several attempts to no result. I have three young children that I have taken to the ER at Westerly hospital for various reasons. I have never had a bad experience with their ER personally. They are wonderful with my kids. To give an example. My youngest who is 4 got a big gash on his chin from falling on stone steps in our back yard. Before we even got into the ER two nurses came out to see him. One came out with a dinosaur toy because he asked if they had dinosaur toys there and another came out with some stickers. It was very sweet. Then when we got into the ER itself. They were super busy that day. But they came and said they were going to move him into the room because we were in one of the hall beds. They had to glue his chin shut. It was cute how they did it. They "wrapped him like a burrito" with a blanket and he thought it was funny. The whole time explaining to him what was happening so he wasn't scared. Then after they were done another nurse peeked around the corner with a crab stuffie. They really made this experience for my son less traumatizing. I appreciated the way they handled the situation. I know some people have had different experiences but mine have been good here. read more

Took my husband in for what he thought might be a blood clot in his lower leg. We arrived around 6am the triage nurse got us in right away, the ER was completely empty, once in the room a nurse came in quickly and confirmed the triage info, shortly after ER doctor came in and even after learning that my husband was 60, a history of heart and cholesterol condition and that what presented as a potential blood clot he proceeded to be completely casual and told us radiology was not open yet and when they did arrive they would likely have other appointments and we could be waiting hours so if we wanted we could go home and call in to make an appointment for radiology at a "later date" and that a clot if in fact it was one below the knee wasn't wasn't likely to present an immediate danger. We opted to stay and wait for radiology and indeed he had a clot, fortunately for us there was a shift change and we got a new ER doctor who was very helpful and had a much better beside manner. Had it not been for the nurses and the second doctor my rating would be a one star. read more

Would you trust a hospital where there is no one staffing the ER front desk? Yeah, me either. Completely unheard of. I walked in and instead of a receptionist, in the EMERGENCY room, there is a slip of paper to fill out and a box to put it in. No joke. So I filled out the paper, and went to wait. I was there for 25 minutes and no one even knew I was there, or why. NO ONE looked at that box or the slips of paper in it. So if you go in there and you are seriously injured or ill, are you supposed to start yelling and hope that you get someones attention??? The supposed triage nurse is either not around or holed up in a closed office, NOT checking that box. I gave up, called urgent care to see if they could treat my injury, and was in and out of there in an hour. This place is very close to me but I will never go back for anything. My husband and I each had minor procedures done here (his was a carpal tunnel operation) and things went smoothly and the staff was pleasant and competent. Sure, it's a small town hospital so I wouldn't have anything major done here (doubt they even do that) and am not so sure how I'd feel about any major emergency situation, either, but it's proven to be a fine, small local health care facility. read more

Would not recommend this hospital. I went in with a broken nose on Thursday night and felt highly uncomfortable my entire visit. I waited four hours for doctors to tell me that I broke my nose in one spot and they also refused to put my nose back in place that night because they claimed it was too swollen. I was seen by doctor David Bouslough MD. Every time I consulted with him the conversations we had were very short and he did not explain anything to help me with moving forward with this injury. Instead he told me that I needed to consult with an Otolaryngology in about five days to further discuss putting my nose back into place. Three days later, I went to my primary care doctor because I was in excruciating pain for him to tell me that my nose being out of place meant that it was dislocated, which I had never been told about at Westerly Hospital. The same day I went to Rhode Island Hospital because of the amount of discomfort I was in for them to tell me that my nose was broken in FOUR places not one and also, that the doctor that I saw at Westerly Hospital should have put my nose back in place that night instead of making me wait almost five days; it didn't matter if it was swollen. They also said if I waited the five days that I was told to wait I would have most likely needed surgery to fix my nose because it would have been harder to move after the bones were already fusing together. It was difficult for the doctors to fix my nose at RI Hospital, but thankfully for them there was still some movement and they were able to straighten it out again. It was likely that Dr. Bouslough wanted me to wait that long so that I would have surgery on my nose and so that would be more money in his pocket, which is sad considering the fact that I am a 19 year old college student that would not be able to afford that or even take off enough time to recover from something like that. Moral of the story, even if I have life threatening injuries, I will never go back to Westerly Hospital again. They not only waisted my time and money, but almost jeopardized my appearance for their own benefit. read more
